Species background and origin

Long cultivation has shaped Polyscias fruticosa, and no single wild population defines the plant grown today. Its history is centred on central Malesia and the south-west Pacific. People have carried it widely through tropical Asia and beyond, where it occurs in settlements, gardens, hedges and naturalised vegetation as well as formal cultivation.

Its roles in food, medicine, social traditions and ornament all encouraged continued propagation. The finely divided form known as Ming aralia may be a widely maintained cultivated type instead of one traceable clone.

Container care for Ming aralia

Feeding: Give light, regular fertiliser while new foliage is developing and use less during slower periods. Stem or cane cuttings can root in a warm, porous medium.

Light: Polyscias ‘Ming Aralia’ prefers bright, filtered light and may accept mild sun once acclimatised. Low light produces weak, open shoots and leaf loss, while an abrupt move into strong sun can scorch the fine leaflets.

Roots and substrate: Grow it in an airy, humus-rich substrate. Water thoroughly, then allow the upper part of the mix to lose moisture before the next irrigation.

Troubleshooting Polyscias fruticosa ‘Ming’: leaf, stem and root problems

Leaf fall after relocation, pruning or repotting can be a temporary stress response. Test the mix and stem before adding water. A firm stem with healthy buds can reshoot under stable warmth and filtered light. A soft base, black roots or sour-smelling substrate is consistent with active rot instead. Remove failed tissue, then choose a smaller pot that fits the remaining roots and refill it with an airy mix.

Dry leaflet edges commonly follow uneven moisture, salts or dry heat. General yellowing while the mix remains wet points to root stress; long open growth points to insufficient light. Do not correct all three possibilities with fertiliser. Restore root aeration and stable conditions first, then resume light feeding only when new leaves are developing.

Fine speckling, bronzing and wispy webbing indicate spider mites. Brown shell-like insects or sticky residue suggest scale, while white cottony clusters indicate mealybugs. Inspect interior stems and leaflet undersides, isolate the plant and use an appropriate labelled treatment. Prune only the worst affected shoots and avoid combining severe pest treatment with repotting unless the roots are also failing.

About the name Polyscias fruticosa

Polyscias combines Greek polys, many, with skia, shade, parasol or canopy. The epithet fruticosa is Latin for shrubby or bushy and describes the woody, freely branching habit.

Johann Reinhold Forster and Johann Georg Adam Forster established the genus Polyscias in 1776 in Characteres Generum Plantarum, second edition, page 63.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Panax fruticosus in 1763 in Species Plantarum, second edition, page 1513. Hermann August Theodor Harms later placed it in Polyscias as Polyscias fruticosa in 1894 in Die Natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien, volume 3, issue 8, page 45.
