Polaskia chichipe is a branching columnar cactus from Mexico with ribbed green to grey-green stems and upright, branching columnar growth. Young plants stay compact in pots, while older plants can develop a more tree-like, branched structure over time.
Its dry-habitat structure calls for strong light, a mineral substrate and careful watering that lets the root zone dry properly between waterings. The ribbed stems store water, while the roots need fast drainage and regular access to air.
In habitat, Polaskia chichipe can grow as a tree-like cactus in desert or dry shrubland conditions. Container-grown plants stay much smaller, but the same structural logic remains: ribbed stems store water, while the roots need quick drainage and long periods with air around them.
A mineral cactus mix matters because heavy, moisture-retentive soil keeps the root zone wet for too long. A pot with drainage holes and a gritty substrate gives the plant the drier root environment it needs between waterings.
The spines can scratch skin and injure pets or children. Handle the plant with care and place it where the stems cannot be brushed against accidentally.
Polaskia chichipe was published by Curt Backeberg in 1951 after an earlier basionym by Roland-Gosselin. The genus Polaskia honours Charles Polaski, an American cactus enthusiast.
