Platycerium bifurcatum 'Netherlands'

Origin, habitat and cultivation

Platycerium bifurcatum is native across a broad Australasian range, from Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands and Sulawesi through eastern Australia, Norfolk Island and New Caledonia. It grows mainly on trunks and large branches and sometimes on rock. Several accepted subspecies occupy different parts of this range.

Shield fronds and connected plantlets build a shared nest that traps litter, water and nutrients above the ground. Natural colonies show different roles among upper and lower plantlets, while the host tree supplies support rather than nourishment. ‘Netherlands’ is a compact cultivated selection; its name identifies the cultivar and does not alter the fern’s Australasian origin.

Feeding, support and propagation: Supply dilute fertiliser during active growth, taking care not to leave concentrated salts behind the shield fronds. Enlarge or replace the mount only when the colony has genuinely outgrown its support, since repeated disturbance damages the root nest. A well-developed offset can be separated once it has its own roots and growing point. A cut antler frond cannot produce a new plant.

Light, settling in and temperature: Platycerium ‘Netherlands’ grows well in bright, filtered light with limited gentle sun after acclimatisation. Too little light weakens growth of the green antler-shaped fronds, while abrupt intense sun can bleach the fronds. Stable warmth supports active growth, although established Platycerium bifurcatum tolerates cooler conditions better than many tropical staghorn ferns. Freezing remains damaging.

Root care, watering and feeding: Roots belong in a small, airy nest of coarse organic material, not dense soil. Thoroughly wet a mount or open epiphytic mix, including the area behind the shield fronds, then allow air to return before watering again. Do not keep the crown permanently stagnant. Brown, papery shield fronds continue to protect and feed the root nest and should not be stripped away. The pale, star-shaped hairs on green fronds also protect the surface and should not be rubbed off.

Issues to look out for

The flat basal fronds around the root nest are called shield fronds. Older shield fronds naturally turn brown and papery while remaining attached. This is not rot unless the tissue becomes wet, black, soft or foul-smelling at the growing point. The pale felt on green antler fronds is also protective, not mildew or dust. Mature antler fronds may also develop broad brown spore patches that merge across their undersides; these fertile areas are normal. Do not peel away shields or rub off the hairs, since both actions damage healthy tissue.

Black, soft tissue near the bud can result from stagnant moisture or cold damage. Dry the root nest promptly, improve airflow and remove only clearly decayed material. Dry brown tips without crown softening more often follow insufficient water, salt accumulation or very dry conditions. Wet the complete root nest, allow it to drain and begin drying, and avoid letting water remain trapped behind shields.

Scale insects resemble irregular brown or pale discs on fronds and may leave sticky residue. Mealybugs form cottony clusters in sheltered crevices. Inspect beneath overlapping shields without tearing them away. If pests are present, keep the staghorn separate from other plants. Carefully remove accessible insects, then use a staghorn-safe treatment according to its label, avoiding products that strip the protective felt. A cut antler frond will not root, so preserve the living bud and rooted offsets during recovery.

What does the name Platycerium bifurcatum mean?

Platycerium combines Greek words for “broad” and “horn”, referring to the spreading fertile fronds. Bifurcatum means “twice-forked” or “forked”, describing their repeated division.

Nicaise Auguste Desvaux established the genus Platycerium in 1827 in Mémoires de la Société Linnéenne de Paris, volume 6, page 213.

Antonio José Cavanilles first described it as Acrostichum bifurcatum in 1799 in Anales de Historia Natural, volume 1, page 105. Carl Frederik Albert Christensen later placed it in Platycerium as Platycerium bifurcatum in 1906 in Index Filicum, page 496.
