Piper methysticum ‘Bright Eyes’

Identity and natural origin of Piper methysticum ‘Bright Eyes’

Piper methysticum, known as kava, occurs naturally from the Santa Cruz Islands to Vanuatu. Vanuatu is often regarded as a probable centre of origin and diversity for cultivated kava. Kava is an ancient clonal crop that has been grown across Pacific islands for centuries and traditionally maintained from stem cuttings.

‘Bright Eyes’ is an established horticultural selection of kava with golden-centred leaves.

How to grow Piper methysticum ‘Bright Eyes’

• Temperature: Keep the plant consistently warm, around 20–28 °C, with protection from cold draughts.
• Light: Give bright filtered light so the variegated leaves receive even light.
• Water: Keep moisture steady while the plant is growing. Water once the upper layer begins to dry and let excess water leave the pot freely.
• Substrate: Use a fertile, airy mix that stays evenly moist and drains freely.
• Feeding: Feed regularly at a moderate dose while new stems and leaves are developing, using a balanced fertiliser according to the label.
• Humidity: Keep moderate to high humidity around new leaves and gentle air movement between the stems.
• Pruning and support: Prune above a healthy node to encourage branching. Add a cane or stake when a heavy stem begins to lean.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots are dense, the plant starts drying much faster between waterings or it becomes top-heavy. Choose a stable container one size larger.
• Propagation: Use a healthy stem section with several nodes and keep it warm and humid until roots and a new shoot are established.

Common problems with Piper methysticum ‘Bright Eyes’

• Large leaves wilt even though the substrate is moist: Heat stress, cold roots or waterlogged, compacted mix can leave the leaves limp. Check the temperature, drainage and roots before adding more water.
• Older leaves become pale or yellow: Root stress or a lack of nutrients may be involved. Check the roots first; if they are healthy and the plant is growing, resume balanced feeding.
• Golden leaf areas develop dry tan patches: Strong direct sun can scorch the lighter tissue. Move the plant into bright filtered light.
• Sticky leaves or clusters of small soft-bodied insects appear: Aphids can gather on kava stems and new growth. Isolate the plant, use a product labelled for aphids and repeat it as directed on the label.
• Roots or lower stems become soft: Saturated substrate can lead to root and stem decay. Cut away rotten tissue to clean healthy tissue with a clean tool, discard the rotten material and repot into fresh airy mix.

Keep Piper methysticum ‘Bright Eyes’ away from children and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its effects after chewing or swallowing are unclear, and plant material can still cause an upset stomach.
• Contact a veterinarian or medical professional if symptoms develop or do not settle.

Piper methysticum: where the name comes from

Piper is Latin for pepper. Methysticum derives from Greek methystikós, meaning ‘intoxicating’, a name connected with kava's traditional psychoactive use.

Carl Linnaeus established the genus Piper in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 28.

Johann Georg Adam Forster first described Piper methysticum in 1786 in Dissertatio de Plantis Esculentis Insularum Oceani Australis, page 76.
