Pilea pubescens 'Silver Tree' is a compact, silver-marked Pilea with bronze-green foliage and a small bushy habit. The leaves can show a pale central marking against the darker surface.
The species range includes seasonally dry tropical habitats, so the upper substrate can dry slightly between waterings. Indoors, it needs bright indirect light, an airy substrate and watering that keeps the roots from staying wet for long periods.
Pilea pubescens is native from Mexico to Tropical America and is associated mainly with seasonally dry tropical conditions. Indoors, this supports a watering approach where the upper substrate dries slightly before the next watering.
In a pot, Pilea pubescens 'Silver Tree' grows as a small, leafy mound. A free-draining mix lets the roots take moisture while excess water moves away from the root zone.
Pilea are generally considered non-toxic houseplants, but chewing leaves can still irritate a pet’s stomach. Keep it out of reach if pets regularly bite houseplants.
Pilea pubescens was described by Frederik Michael Liebmann in 1851. The epithet pubescens means softly hairy, referring to a downy surface in botanical use.
