Golden foliage from a seasonally dry species

Golden or chartreuse foliage distinguishes the Flavum and Aurea forms of Philodendron warszewiczii.

The species grows from southern Mexico through Central America to Panama, mainly in seasonally dry tropical forest. Wild plants may grow on the ground, rocks or trees and can lose their leaves during the dry season.

Flavum or Aurea philodendron: golden-leaf care

• Light: Give the golden or chartreuse foliage bright filtered light. Pale lobes scorch readily in abrupt direct sun, while low light limits the energy available for new growth.
• Water: While it is growing strongly, water deeply after the surface becomes partly dry. If growth slows or leaves are shed, allow more drying between waterings to match the plant's lower demand.
• Humidity and airflow: Moderate humidity supports new leaves, with airflow moving through the finely divided canopy.
• Temperature: Warm conditions encourage active growth; protect the plant from cold, especially while the substrate is moist.
• Substrate: Choose a coarse, well-aerated mix that drains promptly and does not collapse around the roots.
• Support and space: Use a strong support or broad, stable base for the stout stem and spreading golden leaves.
• Feeding: Use a gentle feed only during active growth. Extra fertilizer cannot create stable golden colour and accumulated salts can brown pale margins.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or as strong growth resumes, increasing container size gradually.
• Propagation: Preserve the golden selection with a cutting from a healthy node, a rooted offset or an air layer. Seed will not reproduce the same selected foliage.

Flavum or Aurea philodendron: golden colour, rest and rot

• Seasonal slowing: Growth can slow and leaves may be shed as light, warmth and water use fall. The stem and roots should remain firm; reduce water and fertilizer to match demand without drying the root system completely.
• Golden leaves versus stress yellowing: Uniform chartreuse or yellow divided leaves are expected. Stress-related yellowing is more likely to change with leaf age, appear between veins or occur alongside weak roots and stalled growth.
• Pale-tissue injury: Direct sun, cold, severe drying and fertilizer salts can mark golden tissue quickly. Remove harsh exposure, check the full root zone and flush accumulated salts when needed.
• Rot versus rest: A firm leafless stem can resume growth, but soft dark tissue, collapsing roots or foul odour indicate decay. Remove dead areas, renew the airy mix and keep the pot from remaining saturated.
• Pest marks on golden foliage: Mite stippling can be inconspicuous against golden tissue, so check the lower surface for fine damaged points or webbing. Silver scars and black specks on opening leaves indicate thrips. Separate the plant and cover both surfaces with a treatment that lists the identified pest.
• Greener new growth: Leaf colour can vary with age and conditions. Compare successive leaves under similar light and check root health before using fertilizer or strong sun to change the colour.

Flavum or Aurea philodendron: golden-leaf safety

• Golden leaves and bare stem: Its golden leaves, new shoots and bare stem are unsafe to chew, including while the plant is resting. Its living tissues contain bundles of insoluble calcium-oxalate crystals called raphides. Chewing releases these microscopic needles, which irritate the lips, mouth and throat. Keep the bare stem and later golden shoots beyond chewing reach, including while the plant is resting.
• If a person chews it: Chewing can cause immediate burning or pain in the mouth, redness, drooling and swelling of the lips or tongue. Swallowing may become painful or difficult. Remove any visible plant pieces. Rinse the mouth with water, then spit out the water. Contact a local poison centre and identify the plant as Flavum or Aurea philodendron. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force fluids if swallowing is painful or difficult.
• If a cat or dog chews it: Cats and dogs may drool, paw at the mouth, gag or vomit after chewing. They may also refuse food or develop swelling of the lips or tongue. Move the pet away from the plant. If it is safe, remove visible plant pieces and gently wipe or rinse the mouth. Call a veterinarian or animal poison centre and identify the plant as Flavum or Aurea philodendron. Do not induce vomiting. Do not force food or liquid.
• Sap on skin or in the eyes: A cut stem, new shoot or golden leaf stalk can expose sap. Sap can redden the skin and cause stinging or itching. In the eyes, it can cause painful irritation. Wash affected skin with soap and water for 15 minutes. If sap gets into an eye, rinse it with clean water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical care if pain, redness or changes in vision are severe or continue.
• When to get urgent help: For a person, get urgent medical help for excessive drooling, severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking. For a pet, get urgent veterinary help for severe swelling of the mouth or tongue, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or choking.

Yellow Flavum and golden Aurea

Warszewiczii is a Latinized dedication to Polish naturalist and collector Józef Warszewicz. Koch and Bouché based their 1855 species name on his Guatemalan material. Philodendron itself is formed from Greek roots for loving and tree.

Latin flavus, rendered here as ‘Flavum’, means yellow or golden-yellow. ‘Aurea’ comes from aureus and means golden. Both horticultural labels describe chartreuse-to-golden foliage; their use as two separate formal cultivars is undocumented.
