The base cultivar ‘Rojo Congo’ came from a planned cross made in 1995 by breeder Marian Wincenty Osiecki at Oglesby Plants International in Altha, Florida. The selected plant was identified the following year, and a United States plant patent was granted in 2003.

The variegated plant has the same compact, upright self-heading form, with cream, mint, pale-yellow and peach-pink colour through the foliage.
