Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ Variegata

Origin of Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ Variegata

The base cultivar ‘Rojo Congo’ came from a planned cross made in 1995 by breeder Marian Wincenty Osiecki at Oglesby Plants International in Altha, Florida. The selected plant was identified the following year, and a United States plant patent was granted in 2003.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ Variegata

• Crown care: Tip out water caught between the closely spaced leaf stalk bases after watering and remove dead material from the centre once it is dry.
• Pot stability: Choose a stable container that can balance the broad, self-heading crown as the leaves spread.
• Light: Keep the whole rosette in bright filtered light, with cream and peach sections protected from harsh direct sun.
• Water and mix: Use both surface dryness and pot weight as cues. When the upper part has dried and the pot feels lighter, water the root ball thoroughly in an airy mix and let excess drain.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep the plant between about 18 and 29 °C during normal growth, with protection from sustained temperatures below 15 °C. Maintain roughly 50–60% humidity.
• Feeding: Use moderate nutrition while new leaves are forming and reduce feeding when visible growth slows.
• Repotting: Increase pot size when roots fill the container. Refresh the mix if its structure has broken down or drainage has slowed; improve pot stability separately when the crown becomes top-heavy.

Problems and solutions for Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ Variegata

• A fresh blade opens creased with black specks in the fold: Check first whether it was trapped against older foliage, then inspect for thrips. If live thrips are present, isolate the plant, clean accessible insects from the crown and use an indoor-ornamental treatment currently labelled for thrips as directed.
• A new leaf carries far more green or cream: Leaf-to-leaf variation is normal in this cultivar. Judge several leaves before pruning a healthy crown and retain enough green tissue to support the plant.
• White cottony clumps appear at petiole bases: Look deeper into the crown for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects from accessible crevices and use a product currently labelled for mealybugs on indoor ornamentals, repeating only as the label requires.
• Pale sections brown while green tissue stays firm: If browning faces strong light or hot glass, move the rosette into gentler filtered light. Rehydrate a root ball that has dried hard and check it sooner on the next cycle. Clear more room around opening leaves when the marks follow rubbing inside the crown. Move the plant away from hot dry airflow when damage is concentrated on that exposed side.
• The plant remains limp in damp mix: Delay the next watering and make sure the pot drains freely. If firmness does not return, inspect the roots; remove mushy sections, keep the firm root system and repot in fresh airy substrate only when the existing mix is no longer draining well.

Philodendron ‘Rojo Congo’ Variegata is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Philodendron mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
