Philodendron 'Purple Congo' is a self-heading hybrid in the erubescens group with broad, glossy leaves that open deep red-purple, move through burgundy stages, and finally settle into very dark green with a moody undertone. It offers colour mostly through new growth and transition rather than through variegation, which makes the plant feel rich without becoming visually busy. Indoors it usually reaches around 60–100 cm while keeping an upright, compact outline that does not need staking.
Bright, indirect light keeps the darker tones stronger, while watering after the top 2–3 cm of mix has dried helps avoid yellowing from trapped moisture. A barky, coir-based aroid mix, temperatures near 20–28 °C, and humidity around 60–75% suit it well.
It is toxic if ingested and works best for growers who want structure with a darker palette.
