Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’

Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’ is known from cultivation. Its original breeder, parentage and place of selection remain undocumented.

Horticultural listings also use the names ‘Lemon Lime’ and ‘Golden Goddess’ in connection with ‘Malay Gold’. The cultivar identities attached to these names are still uncertain.

Care for Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’ as it climbs

• Support: Add a pole or board once the stem begins to lengthen so flexible aerial roots can meet the surface.
• Light: Use bright filtered light for strong chartreuse growth and keep pale foliage away from hot direct sun.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures near 18–29 °C, with protection from prolonged conditions below 15 °C. Use approximately 50–60% as the humidity target where practical. Air should still move lightly around the plant.
• Watering and mix: Water thoroughly when the upper mix has begun to dry. Use an open potting mix that drains freely and retains some moisture deeper around the roots.
• Feeding: Feed while new leaves are growing, lightly, and reduce feeding when growth slows.
• Repotting: Give the roots a little more room when they fill the pot, while keeping the support and container stable. If the climbing setup becomes unstable, secure the support independently.
• Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node; keep an existing aerial root attached if one is present.

Solving growth and leaf problems on Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’

• The stem stretches and later leaves stay small: Check whether the plant is both dim and unsupported. Increase filtered light gradually and guide a lengthening stem onto a pole or board; judge improvement from later growth before changing the feeding routine
• Dry pale patches form on the brightest leaves: Direct sun can scorch chartreuse tissue. Move the plant out of the beam but keep it in a bright position
• Older leaves become noticeably greener: Some greening is normal as foliage hardens. Keep the routine unchanged when the newest leaves remain healthy
• Yellowing appears while the pot remains wet: Give the root zone more time to dry and make sure excess water is escaping. Persistent wilt in wet mix calls for a root check: retain firm roots, replace compacted substrate if drainage has deteriorated and remove only failed soft roots. The watering guide helps compare a plant that is too dry with one that is staying wet

Philodendron ‘Malay Gold’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Philodendron first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
