Joep Moonen’s Mataroni River discovery

Joep Moonen first found Philodendron × joepii near the Mataroni River in French Guiana around 1990. The specimen used for its formal description was collected from this very restricted lowland wet-forest area in 2000, at only 5 m elevation.

Thomas Croat described it in 2022 as a natural hybrid. Its features and local occurrence point to Philodendron bipennifolium and Philodendron pedatum as the probable parents.

• Light: Bright filtered light provides the energy needed for mature leaves that narrow strongly through the middle. Avoid sudden direct-sun exposure.
• Water: After the surface becomes partly dry, soak the entire mix and allow complete drainage.
• Humidity and airflow: The narrow middle of each new leaf unfurls with less risk of tearing in moderate to high humidity. Airflow keeps the new growth dry.
• Temperature: As a lowland climber, it prefers stable warmth and protection from cold draughts.

• The mature asymmetric outline: The mature leaf is naturally uneven, abruptly narrow through the middle and divided into unequal sections. A repeated organised shape across mature leaves is characteristic of the plant, not pest distortion.
• Simpler new leaves: Young or recently propagated stems can return to less divided foliage. Restore climbing contact and bright filtered light and judge maturity over several successive leaves.
• Fresh scars across narrow sections: Fresh silver scrapes, black specks and local collapse do not belong to the normal asymmetric outline. Inspect rolled leaves, move the vine away from others and use a thrips-labelled treatment at the repeat intervals stated on its label.
• Tears at narrow sections: The constricted parts of the blade can crease or split during handling and rubbing. Give the plant lateral clearance and keep the support stable; existing dry tears will remain.
• Mite damage: Fine pale stippling, bronzing or webbing on the lower surface indicates mites. Confirm with magnification, rinse accessible lower surfaces and apply a product labelled for mites across every affected section.
• Wet roots beneath a climbing stem: Several yellowing leaves together with soft roots, odour or a wet pot point to failure below the climbing stem. Remove dead roots, replace dense mix and prevent the support from holding stagnant water against the plant.

• Chewing releases insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause immediate mouth pain, drooling and difficulty swallowing.
