Philodendron x joepii comes from French Guiana and is a natural hybrid of Philodendron bipennifolium and Philodendron pedatum.

Growing Philodendron x joepii

• Light: Give it bright filtered or indirect light, with enough light reaching the climbing stem as well as the upper leaves.
• Watering: Let the top layer dry before watering again. When it is ready, soak the root ball evenly and allow all surplus water to escape.
• Temperature: A warm range of about 18–27°C suits it. Keep it above 15°C and away from cold airflow.
• Humidity: Aim for about 50–60% humidity while new leaves expand. Keep gentle airflow around the climbing plant and avoid very dry heater air.
• Substrate: Use a loose, airy aroid mix with fast drainage and some moisture retention.
• Climbing support: Guide the stem up a pole, plank or moss pole and extend the support before the growing tip runs past it. New roots can attach as the stem advances.
• Propagation: Use a one-node stem cutting and root it in warm conditions in water or an airy propagation medium. Move it to a pot after it has developed a stable set of roots.

Yellowing, mealybugs and leaf damage

• A leaf tears at one of its narrow sections: Check whether the soft leaf has been rubbing against a wall, support or neighbouring foliage, or was bent while the plant was being moved. Give new leaves more clearance and avoid handling them until they have firmed up.

• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.

When was Philodendron × joepii first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet joepii honours Joep Moonen, who discovered the plant and kept it in cultivation.
