Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’

Cultivated origin of Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’

Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’ is a cultivated Philodendron climber.

How to care for Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’

Support and leaf clearance. Secure the lengthening stem to stable upright support with loose ties. Guide aerial roots towards the support and leave enough space for the long side lobes to open freely. Keep the pot and support stable as the upper growth gains weight.

Light. Give the plant bright filtered light, introducing brighter conditions gradually.

Warmth and airflow. Maintain about 18–29 °C around Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’. Use a warmer position during prolonged spells below 15 °C. Maintain gentle airflow and protection from draughts.

Humidity. Aim for about 50–60% humidity.

Watering and drainage. Check moisture below the surface and use the pot weight as a second cue before watering. Water it only when the upper layer feels dry, has lost its cool dampness and the pot is noticeably lighter. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain promptly through an airy mix.

Feeding. Feed with houseplant fertiliser at light strength during active growth and reduce applications when the plant slows down.

Repotting. When roots fill the container, move the plant to a slightly larger pot and keep its support secure.

Propagation: Use a stem section with at least one node or layering. A node that already carries an aerial root can support quicker establishment. Only material with a node can produce a new climbing stem.

Understanding changes on Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’

Young or post-cutting leaves are simple before later firm leaves develop widely spaced lobes: This is normal developmental change. Assess several nodes and keep light, support and root conditions steady as the plant rebuilds its mature form.

A long lobe has one dry split, or new growth shows silvery scars, dark deposits, stippling or webbing: Crowding or rubbing usually causes a stable split. Recurring silvered damage with dark specks can indicate thrips, and fine stippling with webbing can indicate mites. Give the leaves more opening space, stabilise the support and inspect concealed growth. If pest signs are present, isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Apply a suitable product labelled for that pest to exposed surfaces and concealed rolled growth, repeating as the label directs. Old damage will remain visible.

Successive leaves shorten, their lobes simplify or the stem loses balance as aerial roots fail to attach: Weak support, dim light, recent propagation or root stress can reduce stronger growth. Nutrition becomes relevant after those causes are resolved. Stabilise the stem, guide aerial roots towards the support and check light and the root zone. Feed only after confirming healthy roots.

New growth is distorted, or cottony deposits, fixed bumps, dark specks or webbing collect around old sheaths and nodes: Pests can remain hidden at sheltered points and damage leaves before they unfurl. Isolate the plant, remove loose dead sheath and accessible pest material, and identify the pest. Treat nodes, petiole bases, rolled growth and open leaf surfaces with a suitable labelled product. Repeat checks and treatment as the label directs.

Leaves yellow or lose firmness while the mix stays wet and the pot feels heavy: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce oxygen around the roots and may lead to root rot. Stop watering for now, empty standing water and open the drainage path. Inspect the roots only if decline persists, retaining all firm roots and removing only dead, soft tissue. Repot into an airy, freely draining medium if the mix structure has failed, then correct the watering and light balance.

Leaves droop and their tips or edges crisp while the pot is light and dry: Underwatering is possible; heat, dry air, root damage, salts or a water-repellent root ball can create the same signs. Rehydrate thoroughly, check that the whole root ball is wet and allow it to drain. Shorten the moisture-checking interval. Persistent wilt in moist mix calls for a root inspection and a pause in further watering.

Water-soaked, yellow-haloed or dead spots enlarge or recur: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray injury and physical damage can produce fixed marks. Isolate an advancing case, keep foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue with clean tools. Do not propagate symptomatic growth, and seek a local diagnosis before using disease-specific chemicals.

Philodendron ‘Jerry Horne’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

About the name Philodendron

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
