Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’

Origin of Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’

Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is an established cultivar. Its species placement and parentage are still uncertain.

Caring for Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’

Support, space and repotting. Pair a tall, sturdy support with a sufficiently heavy container, and guide the aerial roots towards the support as the stem lengthens. Leave clear space for the expanding leaves. When roots crowd the pot, move the support and root ball together so the established climb stays stable.

Light and leaf protection. Provide bright diffuse light and increase the light gradually after moving the plant to a brighter position. Shield pale areas from abrupt direct sun and heat, which can damage them more readily.

Warmth, humidity and airflow. Aim for 18–29 °C, keeping the plant clear of prolonged chilling below 15 °C. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth. Air should still move lightly around the plant. Provide gentle airflow and keep water off the leaves.

Watering and drainage. Feel below the surface of the potting mix and lift the pot before watering. Water only when the upper layer feels dry and the pot is noticeably lighter. Water thoroughly and let the excess drain fully. Use an airy, freely draining potting mix.

Feeding: Apply fertiliser sparingly during periods of active growth.

Propagation. Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node and enough green tissue.

Troubleshooting Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’

One firm leaf appearing paler or greener than the last: Cream, mint and green can vary normally between leaves. Assess several leaves together with the plant's overall vigour, retain enough green tissue and leave the plant unpruned after a single leaf.

A leaning vine, unattached aerial roots or successively smaller leaves: Weak support or dim light may be limiting growth; damaged roots and recent cutback are additional possibilities. Stabilise the vine, guide aerial roots towards the support and improve filtered light gradually. Inspect the root zone if decline continues, and feed only after confirming healthy roots.

Dry tan or brown damage on a pale block, exposed side, crease or edge: Sun or heat, dehydration, physical damage and salts are possible causes. Remove harsh exposure and correct the moisture pattern. Flush the medium only when salts are plausible and drainage works. A wet margin that keeps advancing needs the separate spot response below.

Stippling, webbing, silvery scars, dark specks or pest deposits: Stippling and webbing are consistent with mites, silvery scars and dark specks with thrips, cottony deposits with mealybugs, and fixed bumps or sticky residue with scale. Visible insects can confirm the diagnosis. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Use a suitable product labelled for it on exposed and sheltered feeding sites, patch-testing a small pale section before wider treatment. Repeat only as the label directs.

Yellowing or wilting in persistently wet, heavy medium: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce root-zone oxygen and may lead to root rot. Pause watering, remove standing water from any cachepot or saucer and verify that the container drains freely. Inspect the roots only if decline persists, leaving every firm root in place and removing only dead, soft tissue. If the current structure has collapsed or no longer drains freely, repot into an airy, freely draining medium and rebalance watering with the available light.

Separate water-soaked, haloed or dead spots that advance: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray and handling can cause fixed injury. Isolate an advancing case, keep its foliage dry, improve airflow and cleanly remove badly affected tissue. Do not propagate from symptomatic material, and obtain a diagnosis before using any disease-specific chemical.

Crisp tips or edges with droop and a light, dry pot: Dry roots or a centre that has resisted wetting can produce this response. Rehydrate the entire root ball, confirm that water reaches its centre and drain away the excess. Check the medium sooner next time. Continued wilt in moist medium calls for a root inspection; avoid adding water while the cause is checked.

Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

When was Philodendron first published, and what does it mean?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
