Philodendron heterocraspedon

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron heterocraspedon

Philodendron heterocraspedon is native to the western slopes of Colombia’s Cordillera Occidental in Valle del Cauca, especially around the Bajo Calima region, at roughly 20–270 m elevation.

It grows in hot, wet lowland rainforest and in forest where the land begins to rise into the foothills, including older forest, regrowth and steep wooded banks. The plant climbs through surrounding vegetation or grows partly on trees, with its long leaves hanging below the stem.

Growing Philodendron heterocraspedon

Make room for the long leaves. Give the climbing stem a firm pole or plank and leave clear space below and around the foliage so mature leaves can hang naturally.

Use strong indirect light. This helps the plant keep producing long, well-shaped leaves. Move the plant gradually if you need to increase the light level.

Warmth, humidity and airflow. Maintain roughly 18–29 °C. Before conditions settle near 15 °C, move the plant away from cold exposure. Keep the plant at roughly 50–60% relative humidity. Keep a gentle flow of air around the foliage.

Water thoroughly, then let the surface dry. A coarse, quick-draining mix is best. Avoid small top-ups that keep the middle of the pot wet for days.

Feeding. Feed with houseplant fertiliser at moderate strength during active growth and reduce applications when the plant slows down.

Repotting. Repot Philodendron heterocraspedon when the root ball is crowded or the plant and its support no longer sit securely in the current container.

Propagation. For Philodendron propagation, choose a healthy stem section with at least one node; an existing aerial root can shorten establishment.

Reading changes in Philodendron heterocraspedon

• Young leaves look less ribbed than the older ones: That can be normal while the plant matures. Focus on whether each new leaf is healthy and gradually becoming larger.
• A narrow leaf opens with silver streaks and black specks: Check the newest folded growth for thrips. Move the plant away from others and treat if insects are present.
• Fine pale dots collect along the leaves: Look underneath for spider mites and delicate webbing. Deal with the mites promptly before they spread.
• The plant stays limp in damp potting mix: Do not add more water. Let the pot begin to dry, make sure it drains freely and inspect the roots if the problem continues.

Philodendron heterocraspedon is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How the name Philodendron heterocraspedon came about

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” The epithet heterocraspedon combines Greek heteros, meaning different, with kraspedon, meaning edge or border, referring to the petiole’s unequal margins.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Thomas Bernard Croat and Dorothy C. Bay first described Philodendron heterocraspedon in 2008 in Novon, volume 18, page 438.
