Filtered light and even growth. Place the plant in generous filtered light and shield it from harsh direct sun. Rotate the pot a little at a time so the compact crown receives light from different sides through a gentle exposure change.

Keep the crown open and dry. Let the self-heading crown hold its natural upright form. Allow gentle airflow through the close-set leaves, and direct water onto the medium so the petiole bases and centre stay dry.

Separate water-soaked, haloed or dead spots that recur or spread: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray or physical injury can create fixed marks. Isolate an advancing case, keep all foliage dry, improve air movement and remove badly affected tissue cleanly.
