Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ (‘Lime Fiddle’)

Identity and naming history of Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ (‘Lime Fiddle’)

Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ is a horticultural selection whose exact species and lineage are still uncertain. It circulates under the paired trade names ‘Golden Dragon’ and ‘Lime Fiddle’.

Growing Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ (‘Lime Fiddle’)

Support and space. Install a stable pole, stake, plank or trellis early in the climb. Secure the stem with loose ties, guide aerial roots towards the support and give new leaves enough room for their lobes to open freely.

Filtered light and gradual light changes. Give the plant bright filtered light and introduce a brighter position gradually. Shield all leaves, especially their paler areas, from harsh direct sun. Light supports healthy growth, and each leaf develops its own colour pattern.

Warmth. Aim for warm conditions around 18–29 °C. Avoid prolonged temperatures below 15 °C and protect the plant from cold draughts.

Humidity. A 50–60% humidity range suits it.

Watering and drainage. Feel below the surface of the potting mix and lift the pot before watering. Water Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ (‘Lime Fiddle’) only when the upper layer feels dry, has lost its cool dampness and the pot is noticeably lighter. Water thoroughly and let all excess drain. An airy mix around the roots provides both moisture and oxygen.

Potting mix. Pot it in an open bark-based mix with gritty material mixed through it. It needs quick drainage together with modest moisture retention around the root system.

Feeding. Feed lightly with a complete houseplant fertiliser while new leaves are developing.

Repotting. Give the roots more room when they crowd the container; also repot if the plant and its support become unstable. Choose a pot only slightly larger for this plant and secure its support again during repotting.

Pruning and propagation. Retain ample green tissue on the growing plant. For propagation, take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node and enough green tissue.

Troubleshooting Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’

Firm leaves with different colour or lobing: The balance of lime and gold and the depth of the lobes vary naturally through expression and development. Compare several firm, successive leaves to see the pattern over time. Maintain filtered light and steady support as new growth develops.

A leaning stem, longer bare intervals or gradually smaller leaves: Dimmer light or a stem that has pulled away from its support may be responsible. Juvenile growth, recent propagation and root stress can also produce this change. Stabilise the stem, restore filtered light gradually and watch the next growth. Inspect the root zone when decline continues.

Tan, bleached or crisp patches after an exposure change: Damage on the brighter side or pale tissue usually points to excess sun or heat; drought and salts are additional possibilities. Move the plant away from harsh exposure, reacclimatise it slowly and check root-zone moisture. Flush the medium when salts are plausible and the pot drains properly.

Droop with crisp tips or edges in a pot that is light and dry: Dry roots or a water-repellent centre can cause this response. Rehydrate slowly and completely, confirm that the middle of the root ball is wet and allow excess water to escape. Check moisture earlier during the next drying cycle. Continued wilt in moist medium calls for a root inspection and a pause in watering during the check.

Stippling, webbing, sticky residue, cottony deposits, fixed bumps or silvering: Mites can leave stippling and webbing, mealybugs cottony material, scale fixed bumps and often stickiness, and thrips silvered marks with dark specks. Visible insects add confirmation. Isolate the plant, identify the pest and clean accessible material. Apply a suitable product labelled for the identified pest to exposed and sheltered feeding sites, first patch-testing a small pale area. Follow the label for any repeat treatment.

Water-soaked, haloed or dead spots that advance: An advancing pattern can indicate bacterial or fungal leaf-spot disease, often encouraged by wet foliage and weak airflow. Sun, cold, spray or contact can cause fixed marks with a similar appearance. Isolate the plant when spots enlarge or recur, keep foliage dry, improve airflow and remove badly affected tissue with clean cuts. Select firm, healthy material for propagation, and obtain a diagnosis before using disease-specific chemicals.

Yellowing or wilting above persistently wet, heavy medium: Prolonged saturation or poor drainage can reduce root-zone oxygen and may lead to root rot. Pause watering, discard standing water and clear the drainage path. Inspect the roots when decline persists, retaining firm roots and removing dead, soft tissue. Repot into an airy, freely draining medium when the existing structure is compacted or collapsed, then align watering with the available light.

Philodendron ‘Golden Dragon’ (‘Lime Fiddle’) is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Philodendron: name and meaning

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.
