Philodendron gloriosum ‘Zebra’

Origin of Philodendron gloriosum ‘Zebra’

Where the ‘Zebra’ cultivar first arose remains unknown. ‘Zebra’ is a cultivar of Philodendron gloriosum, a Colombian species.

In Colombia, wild plants occur across the Andean and Orinoco regions, mostly between about 350 and 700 m in humid forest. The stem stays close to the ground and creeps through the lower vegetation.

Growing Philodendron gloriosum ‘Zebra’

Plan ahead for sideways growth. Point the creeping tip along the length of a wide pot and repot before it reaches the edge. The stem should stay on the surface, not buried beneath the mix.

Protect the dark velvet from direct sun. Bright, diffused light brings out the pale vein pattern without scorching the leaves.

Temperature and humidity. Warm, stable conditions around 18–29 °C suit it; 15 °C is the lower limit for prolonged exposure. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth.

Watering. Wait for the top layer of the mix to dry, then water evenly and let the excess drain. Keep the low stem clear of constantly wet mix.

Potting mix. Use a loose, freely draining mix around the roots.

Feeding. Use a moderate dose of complete houseplant fertiliser while fresh growth is active, then ease off as growth slows.

Propagation. Propagate from a section of the creeping stem that has a growing point and its own roots, or divide rooted sections when the plant naturally branches.

Problems to watch for in Philodendron gloriosum ‘Zebra’

• The stem runs out of potting mix: Repot into a longer container or reposition the rooted section so the creeping tip can continue across the surface.
• Dry tan patches appear between the pale veins: Patches on the brightest side suggest too much direct light, so move the plant farther from the rays. After a severe dry spell, shorten the watering gap; a visible crust on the mix can also signal mineral build-up.
• Fine pale speckling appears with delicate webbing: That combination is typical of spider mites. Inspect the undersides and treat before they spread to neighbouring plants.
• The newest leaf opens twisted with silver marks and black specks: Thrips are a likely cause. Check the folded leaf and sheltered areas around it, then treat if you find insects.

Philodendron gloriosum ‘Zebra’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Why is it called Philodendron gloriosum?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Gloriosum comes from Latin and means glorious or splendid.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Édouard-François André first described Philodendron gloriosum in 1876 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 23, page 194.
