Dark Form and its Colombian habitat

Dark Form grows from a horizontal stem that creeps across the soil. Philodendron gloriosum is native to Colombian wet forest at about 350–700 m and was described by Édouard André in 1876.

In 2021, the IUCN assessed wild Philodendron gloriosum as Vulnerable because of its restricted range and continuing habitat decline.

Care for creeping aroid roots and foliage

• Light: Use bright, diffused light to support the dark velvet leaves without bleaching them. Dust and residue show clearly, so clean gently with a dry soft brush or cloth.
• Watering: Use a dry surface and lighter pot as the cue, soaking the airy root zone beneath the surface rhizome and letting it drain before watering again.
• Humidity and airflow: New leaves open well in moderate humidity, but neither the foliage nor the rhizome should stay wet in still air.
• Substrate: Select a coarse, moisture-holding mix that remains open around surface roots.
• Repotting: Reposition or repot before the growing tip reaches beyond the container, keeping the rhizome exposed to air.

Dark Form gloriosum: surface marks, colour and rhizome health

• Dust and residue: Mineral films, fingerprints and dust stand out on dark velvet. Remove loose residue with a dry soft brush or cloth; repeated spraying or polishing can leave more visible marks.
• Colour as leaves harden: New leaves change as they harden, and the same leaf can look lighter or darker under different light. Compare leaves at similar ages and under the same conditions before treating colour change as decline.
• Pest marks on a dark leaf: Numerous pale points fit mite feeding, whereas silver scrapes, black specks and damaged expansion point towards thrips. Keep the plant apart while confirming the signs under magnification. Because the dark velvet marks easily, test the selected indoor treatment on a small area and check it before continuing.
• Fading or pale growth: Weak light can produce less compact growth, while abrupt strong light can bleach exposed tissue. Adjust exposure gradually and check roots before using fertiliser as a colour correction.
• Rhizome trouble: The crawling stem should stay firm at the substrate surface. If it becomes buried, soft or foul-smelling, remove affected sections cleanly and restore a coarse, airy mix.
• Wet margins: An advancing water-soaked edge or soft patch is not part of the dark colouring. Separate the plant, keep leaves dry and avoid splashing water from affected leaves onto healthy plants.
• Tears and scuffs: Velvet leaves can scar where they rub or catch while opening. Increase clearance and do not pull new growth; inspect the fold for thrips before deciding the damage was only mechanical.

Philodendron gloriosum dark form is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does Philodendron gloriosum mean, and who first published it?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Gloriosum comes from Latin and means glorious or splendid.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Édouard-François André first described Philodendron gloriosum in 1876 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 23, page 194.
