Philodendron geniculatum

Natural range and habitat of Philodendron geniculatum

Native to Colombia, Philodendron geniculatum grows in warm, humid tropical forest.

Growing Philodendron geniculatum indoors

• Support: As the stem extends, train it on a stable vertical support. Fasten ties loosely around the main stem and leave the leaf stalks and their joints free to move.
• Light: Give bright indirect light to keep growth compact. Increase light gradually if the plant has been kept in a dim position.
• Water: Water thoroughly after the top of the mix begins to dry. Check the pot’s weight and the mix before each watering, as the interval will change with indoor conditions.
• Potting mix: Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix that holds some moisture without becoming dense and soggy.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures near 18–29 °C, with protection from prolonged conditions below 15 °C. Keep relative humidity around 50–60%. Pair this with light air movement around the leaves.
• Feeding: During active vine growth, use complete fertiliser at a measured rate; then reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Repotting: Repot it when root space becomes tight or the pot no longer holds the plant and its support securely. Keep the support secure and use a stable pot, increasing its size slightly only when the roots need more space.
• Propagation: Use a healthy stem cutting with a node; an aerial root at that node can shorten establishment.

Issues & solutions

• A swollen joint appears just below the leaf: This is a normal part of the leaf stalk, not a sign of damage. No treatment is needed.
• Leaves stay small or growth slows: Check the light first. Move the plant closer to bright, indirect light if the room is dim, and make sure the climbing stem has support.
• Lower leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: Let the upper part of the mix dry before watering again and check that the pot drains freely.
• Fine webbing or pale speckling appears: Check the leaf undersides for spider mites. Isolate the plant and treat promptly with a product suitable for houseplants, following the label.

Philodendron geniculatum is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

The meaning and history of Philodendron geniculatum

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.” Geniculatum means jointed or bent like a knee, referring to the prominent petiole joint.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott established the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Literatur, Theater und Mode, volume 3, page 780.

Josef Bogner and Thomas Bernard Croat first described Philodendron geniculatum in 2012 in Willdenowia, volume 42, page 269.
