Philodendron ‘Florida Green’ and the older Florida hybrid

Florida Green is an informal trade name for a uniformly green, lobed Florida-type climber. The older hybrid Philodendron × Florida was recorded by West and Miller in the 1956 proceedings as Philodendron squamiferum × Philodendron laciniatum; the latter name is now accepted under Philodendron pedatum. Robert McColley of Bamboo Nursery in Orlando introduced that historical hybrid, and a July 1958 archive photograph also shows a plant identified as philodendron Florida.

Today’s Florida Green stock belongs to the same horticultural Florida group, but its direct continuity with that historical clone remains uncertain.

Caring for climbing Philodendron ‘Florida Green’

• Light: Provide bright diffused light without prolonged harsh sun. Introduce brighter conditions gradually to protect the leaves.
• Support: Secure the climbing stem to a stable upright support and guide aerial roots into contact with it as the plant grows.
• Water: Let part of the substrate dry before watering thoroughly, then allow the pot to drain completely.
• Substrate: Choose an airy mix that holds some moisture while preserving oxygen and quick drainage around the roots.
• Warmth and airflow: Keep the plant warm with steady airflow, and avoid cold, saturated conditions.
• Feeding: Apply a measured feed during active growth according to the product label, reducing it when growth slows.
• Propagation: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node.

Troubleshooting Philodendron ‘Florida Green’

• Juvenile leaves are simple or only lightly divided: This is normal. Provide stable support, suitable light and time, then assess successive leaves as the mature shape develops gradually.
• An established plant keeps long internodes and small simple leaves: Secure the stem to its support and improve diffused light gradually if the position is dim. If the plant also loses vigour or stays wet for a long time after watering, check drainage and root health before changing feeding.
• Leaves yellow and wilt while the mix remains wet: Pause watering and check drainage. If wilting or yellowing continues with a wet root ball, check the roots. When roots are firm and the mix drains freely, wait for the upper mix to reach the normal dry cue before watering again. If drainage is slow or the medium has collapsed, move the firm roots into fresh airy mix. Confirmed rot means removing dark, soft roots and repotting the remaining firm roots in clean airy mix. When no firm roots remain or decay has reached the stem, use only a firm healthy node above the damage for a new cutting. Remove the soft tissue, and discard the plant if no firm healthy node remains.
• An exposed patch turns pale, bleached or crisp: A dry pale patch after stronger exposure is consistent with sun or heat injury. Return the plant to filtered light and acclimate it more slowly. If the patch is wet, soft or expanding, isolate the plant and obtain a diagnosis.
• New leaves are distorted or silvered, or show fine stippling or webbing: Thrips or mites may be present. Isolate the plant, inspect folds and leaf undersides, confirm the pest and use a treatment labelled for it. Continue monitoring after treatment.
• Cottony deposits, sticky residue or raised shells appear: Isolate and clean the plant, then use a treatment labelled for the confirmed mealybug, aphid or scale infestation. Reinspect the support, nodes and petiole bases repeatedly.
• One lobe is torn or a single leaf emerges malformed: Physical damage during unfurling, a dry-air episode or pest feeding may be responsible. Check carefully for pests, restore steady conditions and let the leaf open on its own. Reassess if the problem repeats on later growth.

Philodendron ‘Florida Green’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

Why is it called Philodendron?

Philodendron combines Greek philein, meaning “to love,” with dendron, meaning “tree.”
