Origin of Philodendron cf. lupinum

The exact origin of this plant remains unknown. Philodendron lupinum itself is native to Acre in western Brazil, where it climbs trees in warm, wet upland tropical forest that is seasonally non-flooded.

Growing Philodendron cf. lupinum indoors

• Climbing support: Add a pole, board or similar support while the stem is still flexible. Aerial roots can grip the support as the vine grows.
• Light: Give bright indirect light to support leaf growth and keep the gaps between leaves short.
• Water: Water thoroughly after the upper part of the mix has partly dried. Let excess water drain away and avoid keeping the pot continuously wet.
• Potting mix: Use a chunky, bark-rich aroid mix that drains freely without drying out immediately.
• Temperature and humidity: Maintain about 18–29 °C and shield the plant from long periods below 15 °C. A 50–60% humidity range suits it. Air should still move lightly around the plant.
• Feeding: Apply houseplant fertiliser at light strength while the plant is actively extending, then reduce feeding as activity drops.
• Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix has broken down and stays wet too long.
• Propagation method: Take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node; an existing aerial root can help establishment.

• Leaves become longer and glossier: This can be a normal part of maturing on a climbing stem. If the plant is firm and growing well, no care change is needed.
• Leaves yellow while the mix stays wet: Let the mix dry further between waterings and make sure excess water can drain freely. If decline continues, inspect the roots and remove only roots that are soft and rotten before repotting in fresh mix.
• New leaves stick, tear or develop crisp edges: Very dry conditions during unfurling can be a cause. Keep watering more even, raise humidity moderately and let the leaf open on its own.
• Fine speckling or webbing appears: Check the leaf undersides for spider mites. Isolate the plant, rinse both sides of the leaves and use a suitable mite treatment according to the label.
