Origin and cultivation background of Peperomia orba 'Pixie'

Peperomia orba was described in 1966 from plants already in cultivation, and its wild origin is still unknown.

This compact green form is widely known as 'Pixie'.

• Light: Place 'Pixie' near a bright window with filtered light to maintain compact growth and protect the leaves from harsh sun.
• Watering: Wait until the top part of the mix has dried and the pot feels clearly lighter. Then water the root ball evenly, let it drain and wait for the mix to dry again before watering.
• Potting mix: Choose an airy mix that holds a little moisture and drains well. Some coarse material helps keep it loose.
• Temperature: Comfortable indoor warmth suits 'Pixie'. Keep it clear of cold windows and draughts, and expect slower growth under cooler conditions.
• Humidity: Average room humidity is generally enough. Where humidity is higher, gentle airflow around the closely packed leaves is useful.
• Feeding: A small amount of balanced houseplant fertiliser during active growth is sufficient; follow the label directions.
• Training: Let the short stems mound and spread in their natural shape.
• Pruning: Snip a long shoot just above a node whenever you want to bring the outline back into a rounded shape; the removed piece can also be used as a cutting.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots have filled the container, the mix no longer takes water evenly or the plant has become unstable. Increase the pot size only modestly.
• Propagation: Root several healthy stem pieces with one or more nodes in a small amount of lightly moist, airy potting mix. Grouping the cuttings together helps rebuild the full mound.

What can go wrong with Peperomia orba 'Pixie'

• Leaves drop while stems remain soft: Check whether the mix is staying wet too long. Reduce watering frequency, improve drainage and inspect the roots if the decline continues.
• New shoots are thin and widely spaced: The plant needs more light. Move it gradually to a brighter spot with indirect light and trim stretched stems if a compact shape is important.
• Leaf edges turn dry and papery: Repeated severe drying, hot air or strong sun can dry and damage the small leaves. Correct the exposure and water thoroughly once the top part of the mix has dried and the pot feels lighter.
• Stems blacken where they meet the mix: Treat this as a rot warning. Remove affected stems with a clean, disinfected tool, discard the rotten material and let the top of the potting mix dry more and keep the mix loose and airy.
• White cottony clusters appear on stems: Inspect the short stem joints for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible pests and, if needed, use a product labelled for mealybugs and indoor ornamental plants, repeating only at the label interval.

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. The Latin word orba means “orphaned”, “bereft” or “without parents”.
