Background of 'Green Gold'

'Green Gold' is a variegated form of Peperomia obtusifolia with an irregular pattern of green, cream and yellow tones.

Peperomia obtusifolia is native from Florida through tropical America. It grows on the ground and on trees in wet tropical areas, with thick leaves that store water and roots that can grow through loose organic matter.

Keeping Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green Gold' healthy

• Light: Place it in bright, indirect light to keep growth compact and the different leaf colours clear. In lower light, new growth may look greener, while direct midday sun can burn cream and yellow areas.
• Water: Let most of the potting mix dry and wait until the pot feels lighter, then water thoroughly and let excess drain.
• Humidity: Normal indoor humidity is usually enough. If the room is humid, make sure air can move around the foliage.
• Temperature: Keep 'Green Gold' around 18–30 °C and away from cold draughts and sudden chills.
• Potting mix: Use a loose, fast-draining mix with coarse particles such as bark, perlite or pumice. The pot must drain freely.
• Feeding: While the plant is growing, feed lightly with a balanced fertiliser, following the label. Light feeding helps limit fertiliser salt build-up in the mix.
• Pruning: Cut overly long stems just above a node to encourage branching.
• Repotting: When the roots become crowded or the mix has broken down, choose a pot only a little larger.
• Propagation: Use a healthy variegated stem section with at least one node so the new plant grows from a variegated part of the stem.

Common issues with 'Green Gold'

• Several new leaves become much greener: Some leaf-to-leaf variation is normal on 'Green Gold'. If greener growth continues across several new leaves, check whether it is getting enough light. Move it gradually to brighter filtered light if needed. If one shoot stays completely green while the rest remains variegated, watch the next few leaves. If the shoot continues producing fully green leaves, cut it back to the last clearly variegated node.
• Pale sections develop dry brown patches: The pale parts of the leaf are more vulnerable to intense sun. Move the plant farther from hot glass or shade it from strong midday rays.
• Leaves turn yellow: The potting mix may be staying wet too long. A softening stem base makes root damage more likely. Let the mix dry further, then check the roots for rot. Cut away black or mushy roots with a clean, disinfected tool, cut back to firm healthy tissue and discard the rotten material.
• Leaves become floppy: Check the mix before watering. If the mix is dry and the leaves are wrinkled, the plant needs water. If the mix is still wet and the leaves are limp, check the roots before watering again.
• Brown shell-like bumps appear: Check stems, leaf stalks and leaf undersides for scale insects; sticky residue may also be present. Isolate the plant, remove visible scale and use a houseplant treatment labelled for scale, repeating treatment at the interval stated on the label.

About the name Peperomia obtusifolia

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. Obtusifolia joins the Latin obtusus, meaning blunt, with folium, meaning leaf.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Piper obtusifolium in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 30. Albert Gottfried Dietrich later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia obtusifolia in 1831 in Species Plantarum, sixth edition, volume 1, page 154.
