Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green Gold' is a variegated baby rubber plant with thick, glossy leaves patterned in green, lime and creamy yellow. It keeps the rounded leaf shape and fleshy branching stems of Peperomia obtusifolia, while the lighter variegation gives the plant a brighter appearance in a small pot.
Each leaf can carry a different balance of green and cream, so the plant develops a varied, irregular pattern rather than a uniform stripe. The overall habit remains restrained and bushy, with new stems slowly filling the pot from the base and lower nodes.
Peperomia obtusifolia is native from Florida to Tropical America and can grow as a perennial or epiphyte in wet tropical habitats. 'Green Gold' shares the same basic indoor behaviour: thick leaves, fleshy stems and a fine root system that prefers air as much as moisture.
The pale leaf areas make filtered light especially important. Bright indirect light supports balanced growth, while harsh direct sun can scorch the cream sections. Deep shade may keep the plant alive, but the stems usually become longer and the growth less dense.
Flower spikes may appear on mature plants, though they are visually secondary. The main display is the glossy variegated foliage and the way each new leaf adds a slightly different pattern to the plant.
Peperomia obtusifolia is listed by ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green Gold' should still be kept from being chewed, because damaged leaves spoil the plant and any plant material can irritate sensitive stomachs.
Peperomia means pepper-like and places the genus in Piperaceae. Obtusifolia means blunt-leaved, matching the rounded leaf tips of the species. 'Green Gold' is the cultivated name used for this cream-and-green variegated selection.
Peperomia obtusifolia 'Green Gold' has glossy green, lime and creamy-yellow variegation on firm rounded leaves.
