Natural range and background of Peperomia obtusifolia

Peperomia obtusifolia is native from Florida through tropical America. It grows both on the ground and on trees in wet tropical habitats, often rooting in loose organic matter around exposed roots and tree surfaces.

Its relatively fine roots are suited to places where plenty of air reaches them, while the thick leaves and stems store water.

Indoor care for Peperomia obtusifolia

• Light: Bright, indirect light keeps growth most compact. The green form can also cope with medium light, while deep shade can lead to wider gaps between leaves.
• Water: Wait until the upper part of the mix feels dry and the pot feels noticeably lighter, then water thoroughly and let excess drain.
• Temperature: Aim for 18–30 °C. Keep the plant away from cold draughts, chilled windows and direct blasts from heaters.
• Humidity: Normal household humidity is usually sufficient.
• Potting mix: Choose a loose houseplant mix with bark, perlite or pumice added for drainage and air movement.
• Feeding: While the plant is growing, feed it occasionally with a balanced liquid fertiliser, following the label. Reduce feeding when growth slows.
• Pruning: If a stem becomes too long, cut it just above a node, where a leaf joins the stem. New side shoots can form below the cut.
• Repotting: A larger pot is needed only after the roots have filled the current one or the mix has become compacted. Choose a pot only slightly larger.
• Propagation: Healthy stem cuttings root readily in a light medium or water. Pot them up once the cutting has a good set of roots.

Troubleshooting Peperomia obtusifolia

• Lower leaves turn yellow: An occasional oldest leaf can yellow naturally. If several lower leaves yellow together, check the potting mix. If it is staying wet, let it dry further before watering again. Check the roots if the stem base is soft or there is a sour smell.
• Leaves wrinkle: Check whether the mix is dry and the leaves have also lost firmness. If so, water thoroughly and allow the pot to drain; water a little sooner next time if the same symptom keeps returning.
• Stems become long with wide gaps between leaves: Light is probably too weak. Move the plant closer to a bright window with filtered light and prune stretched stems if you want fuller new growth.
• Bleached or tan patches form on the upper leaves: Sudden strong direct sun can scorch the foliage. Move it out of hot midday rays and introduce stronger sun gradually.
• White cottony clusters appear: Check nodes, leaf stalks and leaf undersides for mealybugs. Isolate the plant, remove visible insects and use a houseplant treatment labelled for mealybugs, repeating treatment at the interval stated on the label.

How did Peperomia obtusifolia get its name?

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. Obtusifolia joins the Latin obtusus, meaning blunt, with folium, meaning leaf.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

Carl Linnaeus first described it as Piper obtusifolium in 1753 in Species Plantarum, page 30. Albert Gottfried Dietrich later placed it in Peperomia as Peperomia obtusifolia in 1831 in Species Plantarum, sixth edition, volume 1, page 154.
