'Colombiana' is grown for its compact habit, dark leaves, silver-green centre vein and red to burgundy undersides. You may also see it sold as Peperomia metallica 'Colombiana', but its exact species and wild origin are still uncertain.

Indoor care for Peperomia 'Colombiana'

• Light: Filtered light near a bright window helps the metallic centre vein and dark leaf colour show clearly while protecting the foliage from sudden intense sun.
• Watering: Use the weight of the small pot as well as surface dryness as your cue. Once a good part of the mix has dried and the pot feels noticeably lighter, water thoroughly and let it drain. Water again before the root ball stays bone-dry for long.
• Potting mix: Use a fine, open houseplant mix that holds a little moisture, drains freely and dries between waterings.
• Temperature: Aim for steady room warmth and protect the plant from cold windows, sudden temperature swings and draughts.
• Humidity: Average to moderately humid conditions work well, with gentle airflow around the foliage.
• Feeding: When fresh leaves are opening, apply a mild balanced fertiliser according to the label.
• Support: The low, spreading stems are self-supporting.
• Pruning: Pinch or cut back a stem just above a node when one section outgrows the rest of the clump; this also encourages fuller branching.
• Repotting: Repot when the roots have filled the container or the mix has broken down or compacted. Choose only a modest increase in pot size.
• Propagation: Take a short, healthy stem cutting with at least one node. Root it in a small pot of lightly moist, airy potting mix and keep it warm in filtered light.

Common issues with Peperomia 'Colombiana'

• Stems turn soft or dark at the base: First check whether the potting mix is staying wet for too long. Remove the plant from the pot, cut away rotten tissue with a clean, disinfected tool, discard the removed rot and restart firm healthy pieces if necessary.
• Leaves curl or hang limp: Check the potting mix before adding water. Dry mix usually means the plant is thirsty; wet mix with limp growth suggests root problems or rot. Improve drainage and inspect the roots before watering again.
• New growth becomes pale and stretched: The plant is probably receiving too little light. Move it gradually closer to a bright window or suitable grow light so the gaps between new leaves stay shorter and the metallic contrast is stronger.
• Leaf tips or margins become brown and crisp: Repeated severe drying, accumulated fertiliser salts or cold air can all damage the edges. Correct the most likely cause, flush excess salts from the mix if needed and return to the normal drying cycle between waterings.
• New growth becomes scarred or distorted: Inspect the growing points and leaf undersides for thrips; tiny pale speckles or webbing would point more strongly to spider mites. Isolate the plant and, if treatment is needed, use a product labelled for the identified pest and indoor ornamental plants, repeating only at the label interval.

How the name Peperomia metallica came about

Peperomia combines Greek peperi, “pepper”, with homoios, “resembling”, and means “pepper-like”. The species name metallica means “metallic” and refers to the foliage’s metallic sheen and colour.

Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavon established the genus Peperomia in 1794 in Flora Peruvianae et Chilensis Prodromus, page 8.

Lucien Linden and Émile Rodigas first described Peperomia metallica in 1892 in L’Illustration Horticole, volume 39, 79, plate 557.
