Peperomia 'Santorini' is a modern hybrid introduced to the ornamental plant market through the Eden Collection. With its upright habit and striking two-tone leaves, it offers a stylish, contemporary look. The upper surface of the leaves shows a cool grey tone, while the undersides glow in shades of pink-red, giving the plant a dynamic contrast that stands out in any setting.
This hybrid typically reaches 20 – 25 cm in height, forming upright stems that hold elliptic leaves. The foliage is thick and slightly leathery, adapted to store moisture like many Peperomia species. The combination of metallic grey tops and warm-colored undersides makes it a perfect accent plant for modern interiors. In maturity, slender greenish flower spikes may appear, though the foliage is its defining feature.
'Santorini' was developed as part of Eden Collection’s line of compact, decorative Peperomia cultivars. Its name evokes the volcanic island in Greece, a nod to the dramatic contrast of grey and red that mirrors rocky landscapes against vivid sunsets. Like other hybrids in the group, it was bred for ornamental foliage, durability, and ease of care.
Overwatering can quickly damage the roots and stems. Too little light may reduce the intensity of the grey and red contrast. Harsh direct sun can scorch the delicate leaf surface.
‘Santorini’ offers a cooler color palette compared to red-dominant cultivars like ‘Rosso’ or ‘Brasilia’. Its upright, architectural form makes it a good choice for decorative pots and contemporary plant styling. Repotting is rarely needed, as it grows best in snug containers.
The genus name Peperomia was coined in 1794 by Spanish botanists Hipólito Ruiz López and José Antonio Pavón Jiménez after their expeditions in Peru and Chile. It derives from Greek peperi (“pepper”) and homoios (“resembling”), a reference to its kinship with black pepper (Piper nigrum).
With its upright form and two-tone foliage, Peperomia 'Santorini' is a standout hybrid that combines elegance with ease of care. Order today to add this striking Eden Collection cultivar to your space.
