Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' is a compact fountain grass with arching green leaves and soft, foxtail-like plumes that appear from late summer into autumn. The flower heads catch light beautifully and the whole clump moves with even small breezes. In most gardens it stays in a manageable range (often around 60 to 90 cm tall in flower, with a similar spread), so it stays workable in smaller gardens and in larger pots.
Full sun and good drainage bring out the best habit and the strongest flowering. On heavy, wet ground the crown can rot over winter; on very dry sandy soil the plant stays smaller and plumes can be fewer unless watering is available in hot spells.
Plant at the same level as in the pot and water in well. A mulch layer helps keep roots cooler and reduces swings in moisture, but keep mulch light around the crown so the base stays airy. Once established, Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hameln' is fairly drought tolerant, but deep watering during long dry spells keeps the clump fresher and flowering longer.
Leave the foliage standing through winter for structure, then cut the clump back in late winter to early spring before new growth starts. Cutting back too early can expose the crown to extra cold and wet; cutting back too late can mean trimming into emerging shoots.
In containers, use a mix that drains freely and choose a stout pot with good drainage. Pots dry faster in summer and freeze harder in winter, so position and watering rhythm matter. In the ground plays a smaller role once the basics are in place.
