Plump, egg-shaped leaves give Pachyphytum oviferum 'Pink Moonstones' aka 'Pink Panther' its rounded moonstone form. The leaves sit close together in small rosettes and show soft pink, peach, blue-lavender or silvery tones depending on maturity, season and growing conditions.
This plant stores water in thick leaf tissue and grows at a measured pace. It stays compact for a long time, then may form short stems and offsets as it matures. The pale wax coating on the leaves is a delicate protective surface that marks easily when rubbed or wetted.
Pachyphytum oviferum is native to San Luis Potosí in north-eastern Mexico, where it grows on rocky cliffs at around 1200 m elevation. That cliff habitat points to intense brightness, sharp drainage, and a potting mix that dries cleanly between waterings.
The species forms rosettes that are usually about 6–10 cm across, with crowded, egg-shaped leaves carried on short stems that can become decumbent or pendent with age. Pink-toned cultivated plants keep the same rounded Pachyphytum oviferum leaf character, with colour ranging from blush pink to peach, blue-lavender, or silvery tones.
This Pachyphytum has brittle leaves that detach easily and a surface coating that shows lasting marks after rubbing. Keep it out of reach of pets and children that may chew plants or knock the rosette from its pot.
Pachyphytum oviferum belongs to Crassulaceae. Pachyphytum means “thick plant,” while oviferum means “egg-bearing,” matching the rounded leaf shape that gives the species its moonstone common name. 'Pink Moonstones' and 'Pink Panther' refer to pink-toned cultivated plants of Pachyphytum oviferum.
Pachyphytum oviferum 'Pink Moonstones' aka 'Pink Panther' stays compact and slow-growing, with rounded powdery leaves that fit neatly in a small pot.
