Orchid Potting Mix – bark medium for epiphytic orchid roots
Orchid Potting Mix supports orchids that naturally grow with exposed, air-loving roots. In a pot, the bark pieces create spaces where roots can breathe between waterings.
Construction notes
- Bark structure: keeps large pores around roots
- Fast drainage: prevents a heavy soil mass around the crown
- Epiphytic orchids: suited to many pot-grown orchids with aerial-root habits
- Not terrestrial: not the right texture for orchids needing finer, soil-like media
Key details
Old orchid bark eventually breaks down into a finer, wetter material. Repotting into fresh mix restores pore space and gives roots a cleaner physical structure.
More to know
Many Phalaenopsis and similar orchids suit bark-led media, but terrestrial orchids may need a different substrate. Match the mix to the orchid’s root habit.
At a glance
This mix is built around structure first. Use it as a complete potting mix, or blend it into a base soil to adjust airflow and drying speed.
Watering should match the pot size and root mass. Check moisture at depth and adjust your routine after the first few cycles.
Extra notes
- Moisten dry components before potting so the mix settles evenly.
- Choose pot size for the root ball, not for the top growth.
- Top-dress with the same mix to reduce surface compaction.
