Nephrolepis exaltata 'Boston Blue Bell' is a Boston sword fern with soft green, arching fronds. Its fronds rise from a dense base, then curve outward as they lengthen, creating a full fern shape for hanging baskets, high shelves, and bright shaded plant corners.
As a cultivar of Nephrolepis exaltata, it belongs to the classic Boston fern group. The species is native to tropical and subtropical America, where it grows in humid, shaded habitats and can develop terrestrially or as an epiphyte. Indoors, it needs steady moisture, warmth, filtered light and air around the roots.
Nephrolepis exaltata is an accepted fern species in Nephrolepidaceae. In habitat it grows in warm, humid places, including shaded ground and epiphytic positions, so its roots are adapted to moisture with good oxygen around them. Indoors, that means consistent watering and a substrate that drains cleanly.
'Boston Blue Bell' develops its shape as new fronds lift from the centre and then arch over the pot. Raised planters and hanging pots let that curve show clearly, while an evenly moist root ball keeps the plant producing fresh fronds.
Boston fern care depends on steady moisture with airflow, warmth, and filtered light. A lightly, evenly moist root ball keeps frond edges from drying quickly during warm indoor periods.
This cultivar can spend warm months outdoors in full shade or very gentle morning light. Acclimate gradually, keep the pot sheltered from wind, and bring it indoors before cool nights affect the frond base.
ASPCA lists Boston fern as non-toxic to cats and dogs. It is still sensible to keep the plant away from persistent nibblers, because eaten fronds can cause mild stomach upset through volume or texture.
Nephrolepis comes from Greek words for kidney and scale, describing the kidney-shaped indusia on the spore-bearing structures. Exaltata means very tall or lofty. Nephrolepis exaltata is an accepted species first published by Schott in 1834, with the broader species native to tropical and subtropical America.
Nephrolepis exaltata 'Boston Blue Bell' develops soft arching fronds that fall naturally from raised pots, shelves and hanging planters.
