Nepenthes ‘Louisa’, also known as ‘Loes’, is a Highland hybrid between Nepenthes ‘Rebecca Soper’ and N. hirsuta. The result is a vigorous and forgiving plant that combines the dark pitcher tones of ‘Rebecca Soper’ with the hairy exterior inherited from hirsuta. This hybrid is suitable for both beginners and collectors, producing pitchers up to 20 cm that are as striking as they are easy to grow.
This cross combines the reliability of N. ‘Rebecca Soper’ (a ramispina × ventricosa hybrid) with the rugged character of N. hirsuta. The hybrid inherits the compact form and vigor of ‘Rebecca Soper’, while hirsuta contributes its distinctive hairy pitchers and resilience. The outcome is a plant that pitchers freely and adapts well to varied growing setups.
Nepenthes ‘Louisa’ grows rapidly and maintains a compact habit, making it ideal for terrariums, greenhouses, or bright windowsills. Its combination of dark, patterned interiors and pubescent outer surfaces makes it stand out from more common hybrids.
The genus name Nepenthes comes from the Greek ne (“not”) and penthos (“sorrow”), inspired by the mythical potion nepenthe said to banish grief. The hybrid epithet ‘Louisa’ (also marketed as ‘Loes’) is a breeder’s name chosen for horticultural use.
With its pubescent olive-green pitchers, red-striped interiors, and vigorous habit, Nepenthes ‘Louisa’ is a hybrid that combines ease of culture with unique ornamental traits. A reliable grower for both beginners and collectors.
