Monstera 'Thai Constellation'

Cultivated form and natural range of Monstera 'Thai Constellation'

‘Thai Constellation’ is a cultivated variegated form of Monstera deliciosa, distinguished by its cream-speckled and marbled pattern.

Monstera deliciosa occurs naturally from southern Mexico into Guatemala and grows as a tropical climber.

Growing Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’ indoors

Give the thick climbing stem a sturdy pole or plank before it becomes difficult to redirect. Bright, indirect light suits the broad green-and-cream leaves; acclimate the plant gradually after a move and shield pale areas from harsh midday sun.

Let the upper portion of an airy, coarse root mix dry before watering. Rewet the whole rootball, allow excess water to drain and empty any water held in a cover pot. Warm, steady conditions support active growth, and dusty leaves can be wiped with a soft damp cloth.

Feed moderately while the plant is producing new leaves. Move up a pot size when roots have filled the current mix; an oversized container can leave too much wet substrate around a smaller root system.

Troubleshooting Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’

• Brown marks on pale areas: Strong sun, abrupt drying, excess heat or root stress can all mark cream tissue. Move the plant out of harsh sun or hot dry airflow and re-establish even moisture if the rootball has dried too hard. If the plant still wilts while the mix is moist, unpot it only then and check the roots. Keep every firm root and remove only tissue that is soft, hollow, slippery or foul-smelling. Brown tissue will remain damaged; firm unaffected parts of the leaf can stay.
• Green tissue yellows across several leaves: Check how wet the rootball stays and whether drainage has slowed. If yellowing is paired with persistent wilt in wet mix, let the plant drain and unpot it only if decline continues. Keep every firm root and remove only roots that are soft, hollow, slippery or foul-smelling before repotting into fresh airy mix; the root-rot guide gives the full recovery sequence.
• Sticky residue or cottony clusters: Fixed brown or tan bumps with sticky residue indicate scale insects, while cottony or waxy clusters, sometimes with sticky residue, indicate mealybugs. Inspect the leaf undersides, leaf-stalk bases and nodes for these signs. If you confirm scale insects or mealybugs, isolate the plant and remove visible insects from these hiding places. Apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the leaf undersides, leaf-stalk bases and nodes, then repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.
• Silver scarring, black specks or fine webbing: Silver scars with black specks on opening growth point towards thrips, while fine pale stippling and webbing point towards spider mites. If you confirm either pest, isolate the plant and rinse both surfaces of hardened leaves. Test any spray on a small pale and green area before treating the whole plant, then apply a treatment labelled for the confirmed pest to the opening growth and leaf undersides. Repeat it at the intervals stated on the label for the full course.
• New leaves stay small and whole: A young plant may not be ready to develop holes. On an established specimen, make sure the thick stem is securely supported and that the growing point is receiving bright indirect light. If the pot is densely rooted or the mix has compacted and drains slowly, repot into fresh airy substrate. Changes in the hole pattern can appear only on new leaves.

Monstera ‘Thai Constellation’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

What does the name Monstera mean?

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves.

Michel Adanson established the genus Monstera in 1763 in Familles des plantes, volume 2, page 470.
