Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’

Cultivated form and natural range of Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’

Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’ is a cultivated form of Monstera deliciosa. The species is native to the wet tropical forests of southern Mexico and Guatemala. ‘Green Snow’ is known only from cultivation.

Growing Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’

• Use a bright position and introduce direct sun carefully: The plant needs plenty of light for its green tissue, while cream and mint areas can mark after an abrupt move into strong rays. Introduce direct sun gradually.
• Warmth and humidity: Keep conditions around 18–27 °C with moderate to high humidity. Protect the plant from cold draughts and cold glass, and avoid prolonged temperatures below 12 °C.
• Water after partial drying: Water the entire root ball once the upper portion has dried, then let it drain completely. Consistent moisture helps pale sections stay in good condition.
• Keep nutrition moderate: Feed while the plant is actively producing new roots and leaves, and reduce feeding as growth slows.
• Give the stem something solid to climb: Guide the vine onto a pole or board as it extends. Direct aerial roots toward the support or potting mix, and keep leaf stalks and unfurling leaves free.
• Potting mix and repotting: A bark-led mix with coarse mineral material keeps the root zone open and well drained. Refresh the mix when its structure breaks down and increase pot size when roots crowd the container. Stabilise the support separately if the plant starts to lean.
• For propagation, include the growing point: Use a stem section with a node and establish it in warmth and bright, filtered light while the new root system develops.

Common issues and fixes for Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’

• The latest leaf has much less or much more pale colour: The pattern can vary from one node to the next, so no pruning is needed based on one leaf. Compare a run of new growth before making a cut. Firm cream or mint tissue that follows the plant's normal speckled or marbled pattern is normal variegation; when the tissue remains firm, no action is needed. The white-variegated plant guide explains how pale tissue differs from green tissue.
• Mint or cream sections dry to brown: Check what happened immediately before the damage. Move the plant back from stronger direct sun, water the root ball thoroughly after a severe dry-down, or flush the substrate after excess fertiliser. Protect the next leaf; fully dried patches themselves cannot recover.
• Yellowing spreads while the pot is slow to dry: Increase the interval before the next watering and make sure water is not collecting inside a cover pot. If yellowing is joined by wilt or softness near the base, inspect the roots. Cut away only clearly decayed, soft sections, preserve roots that are still firm and healthy, then repot into fresh, airier mix. See the root rot guide if root decay is confirmed.
• New leaves on an established vine are getting smaller: A vine that has come away from its support often loses momentum. Secure the main stem again and improve filtered light if the site is gloomy. Repot only when root crowding or worn-out potting mix gives you a reason. Judge the result on the next few leaves.

Monstera deliciosa ‘Green Snow’ is toxic to people and pets

• Keep this plant away from children, cats and dogs.
• Its leaves and stems contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can irritate the mouth, throat, skin and eyes.
• Chewing may cause burning pain, drooling, swelling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Contact a veterinarian or medical professional after exposure, especially if swelling or breathing problems occur.

How did Monstera deliciosa get its name?

Monstera comes from Latin monstrum or monstrosus, words for something unusual or abnormally formed, referring to the striking holes and divisions in the leaves. The Latin epithet deliciosa means delicious, referring to the edible ripe fruit.

Michel Adanson established the genus Monstera in 1763 in Familles des plantes, volume 2, page 470.

Frederik Michael Liebmann first described Monstera deliciosa in 1849 in Videnskabelige Meddelelser fra den Naturhistoriske Forening i Kjøbenhavn, volume 1, page 19.
