The origins of Frozen Freckles

Monstera adansonii ‘Frozen Freckles’ was developed by Mostert. The species grows wild from Nicaragua and Costa Rica through much of tropical South America, with populations in the Caribbean.

In its native range, Monstera adansonii grows in humid forest, along rivers, at forest edges and in secondary vegetation.

Humidity and airflow: Recently rooted or young plants benefit from warm conditions and higher humidity while their roots establish. Lower humidity in stages as the plant adapts to indoor air.

Light: Keep it in bright, indirect light. Its green areas provide the energy for growth, while the cream-speckled tissue needs protection from strong direct sun. Light supports the plant but does not set the freckle pattern of future leaves. Make changes in exposure gradually to avoid stressing foliage formed in softer light.

Roots and substrate: Water when the top of the rootball has begun to dry while the lower part is still lightly moist. Wet the substrate evenly and let it drain freely.

The repeated cream speckling is the established Frozen Freckles pattern. Irregular green mosaic is more concerning when new leaves are also twisted, stunted or unusually close together. A new shoot may become much greener or almost cream because of the tissue at its bud. This is a change in variegation. Keep enough healthy green leaves to support the pale growth. Compare several later leaves before intervening; stable firm patterning does not require treatment.

Yellowing, wilt or brown edges

Crisp margins can follow a dry rootball, damaged wet roots or fertiliser deposits. Feel the substrate below the surface and inspect roots before changing watering.

Pest signs on leaves and nodes

Flat scales with sticky residue and pale thrips scars with black deposits identify different pests. Folded leaves and nodes should be rechecked after visible insects are removed. Confirm the pest, isolate the plant and use a product labelled for it.
