Cat Moustache and Exclusive Dark are names used for closely similar dark-leaved Maranta with numerous fine silver veins. ‘Momadark’ is another named dark selection and may not be the same clone.

Cat Moustache belongs to Maranta leuconeura, a species from the wet tropics of central and eastern Brazil. It spreads through loose material on the forest floor. A flexible joint at each leaf base enables the daily movement of the foliage.

Care for humidity-sensitive foliage

• Settling in: Keep Cat Moustache warm and stable after delivery. Evening leaf lifting is normal movement, so do not add water solely because the blades have changed angle.
• Light: Give Cat Moustache plenty of filtered brightness. Direct hot sun scorches the velvety blades, while deep shade produces longer petioles and weaker pattern definition.
• Water and mineral salts: Keep the root zone lightly moist, letting only the top begin to dry. Repeated drought rolls the leaves, while saturation damages rhizomes. If tap water leaves deposits, use lower-mineral water and occasionally flush the pot.

• Cottony deposits or silver scars: Mealybugs gather at nodes and leaf bases; thrips scar emerging leaves and leave black specks. Isolate the plant and match treatment to the pest found.
• Spreading leaf spots: Remove badly affected foliage, keep leaves dry and improve airflow. Separate new irregular distortion or mosaic from other plants and watch for continued spread.
