Araucaria heterophylla grows as a straight, upright tree with a single central leader and evenly spaced horizontal branches. The branches grow in clear tiers, and even light helps the young plant stay balanced. Young plants carry soft green foliage along flexible branchlets.
Indoors, it grows slowly and usually keeps its fine green branchlets. The familiar name Norfolk Island Pine refers to its origin; botanically, it belongs to Araucariaceae. It grows naturally on Norfolk Island and nearby Philip Island.
As a conifer, mature outdoor trees form cones; indoors, the tiered branches and soft young foliage are the main features.
Give it enough light before lower tiers thin; bare lower branches usually do not refill properly.
Araucaria heterophylla is considered non-toxic to pets, but it should still be kept out of reach of animals that might nibble the branches or pull the pot over.
The name heterophylla refers to the difference between juvenile and adult foliage.
