Hoya versteegii

Natural origin of Hoya versteegii

Hoya versteegii occurs naturally in western New Guinea.

Care for Hoya versteegii

Keep it clear of extended periods under 10 °C. A humidity level around 50–60% is suitable in the growing area. Bright filtered light, stable warmth, moderate humidity and steady airflow suit this New Guinean climber. Keep temperatures warm and stable, with only modest night-time drops.

When cooler or lower-light conditions slow stem growth, water less often as the same centre-drying cue takes longer to reach, and reduce feeding.

Check moisture in the centre of the pot. Once that area has partly dried, water thoroughly and let the excess drain.

Use coarse bark and mineral material with a small amount of finer material. Use a modest dose of complete fertiliser while the broad foliage is expanding; repot once the roots fill the container.

Give the broad rippled leaves space and install a firm support while new stems are flexible.

Cut a healthy section of stem carrying at least one node and keep the cutting warm as roots develop.

Root, stem and leaf problems in Hoya versteegii

Heavy Hoya versteegii tips cross and tangle on the hoop

Separate only the soft tips and leave firm leaf-heavy stems in place. Give the next turns enough space for the large rippled blades to expand without rubbing.

Inspect the root system and replace compacted substrate before resuming the normal watering cycle. If the roots are healthy, check beside the rippled veins for fixed scale insects. Corky areas that appear after uneven watering in cool still conditions point to oedema; add warmth, airflow and a longer dry interval.

A new rippled Hoya versteegii leaf scorches before firming

Keep a newly expanding broad leaf away from concentrated sun until its lightly rippled surface firms. Introduce brighter exposure gradually and check later margins for clean growth.

Hoya versteegii is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

Where does the name Hoya versteegii come from?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Nadhanielle Simonsson and Michele Rodda named Hoya versteegii in honour of Gerard Martinus Versteeg, a physician and botanical collector in New Guinea.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Nadhanielle Simonsson and Michele Rodda first described Hoya versteegii in 2017 in Gardens’ Bulletin Singapore, volume 69, page 141.
