Hoya Substrate Set focuses on texture rather than heavy nutrition. The mix is meant to dry more cleanly between waterings while keeping enough structure around roots in small pots and hanging containers.

What to expect

Pine bark: sets the main chunky structure
Perlite: reduces weight and keeps small air spaces open
Lava Rock Granules: increase mineral texture and anchor the pot
Custom base: combine with coco coir or fine soil where more moisture contact is needed

Mixing guide

Blend the three materials with a base material instead of potting directly into pure coarse ingredients. This keeps the root zone open but still gives roots contact and moisture buffering.

A very airy Hoya mix can dry quickly in warm rooms. Check pot weight and root condition after repotting, then adjust watering and the base fraction accordingly.

If you repot multiple plants, mix small batches first so you can tune the texture and drying rate to each pot and root system.

This set makes a bark-led mix for established Hoya plants. Measure by volume and keep the blend airy without making it so open that roots lose moisture contact too quickly.

Start with: 4 parts pine bark, 2 parts perlite and 1 part Lava Rock Granules.
For established plants: Keep the bark-led structure when pots are small, conditions are warm and bright, and dense soil would stay wet too long.
For cuttings or small plants: Use slightly less Lava Rock Granules and keep bark pieces well distributed so the root zone does not become too coarse.

If the pot dries almost immediately after watering, the mix is too open for that plant and setup. If it stays wet for too long, increase bark, perlite and Lava Rock Granules slightly.
