Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961)

Origin and identity of Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961)

EPC 961 comes from Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. Its species identity and exact collection locality within Sabah are still uncertain.

Care for Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961)

Give the strengthening vine a stable trellis before the broad leaves mature. Combine bark with porous mineral particles and a small moisture-retentive component; replace the mix when it becomes dense or drains more slowly.

Bright filtered light lets the very dark vein network remain distinct on the light-green leaves. Shield soft new growth from hot direct sun.

Keep the growing area in the 16–24 °C range, with extra protection below 10 °C. Keep the growing environment around 50–60% relative humidity. Keep temperatures stable and avoid moving the small, dark-veined leaves between a warm room and cold glass. Moderate humidity is sufficient when air passes around both sides of the broad leaves.

Let the upper part of the root ball dry and wait until the container feels lighter before watering this Hoya. Saturate the mix evenly, then let the compact centre drain and begin drying.

During active growth, apply balanced houseplant or orchid fertiliser lightly; taper feeding when new growth slows.

If the potting mix becomes compacted or drains more slowly, replace it with fresh airy mix. Move Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961) to a slightly larger pot when its roots have filled the container.

Use a healthy stem cutting with a node for propagation, keeping it in warm conditions until it has rooted.

Health checks for Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961)

Dark veins look weaker on a new leaf

Allow the blade to harden before judging its pattern. If later leaves are also pale and soft, check root health and light together. Distorted tender foliage points to mites or thrips at the shoot tip; isolate EPC 961 and treat the pest found.

A stem cracks at a tight bend

Stop bending as soon as the stem resists, because forcing it can displace the small broad leaves and their dark-veined petioles. Brace the crack and train the next flexible shoot earlier.

The pot remains heavy as leaves yellow

Stop watering, test the centre and remove any dark declining roots. Replace collapsed substrate before resuming a measured wet-dry cycle.

Hoya sp. Sabah (EPC 961) is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.
