Hoya sp. Aceh (Long Leaf form)

Origin and identity of Hoya sp. Aceh (Long Leaf form)

The long-leaved form originates in Aceh, northern Sumatra. Its botanical identity and precise locality within Aceh are still uncertain.

Care for Hoya sp. Aceh (Long Leaf form)

Give the elongated leaves room beside a tall, stable support. Attach each soft shoot with the tie clear of its leaf stalk, and leave older firm stems in their established position.

Give bright indirect or well-filtered light.

An open blend of bark and coarse mineral particles suits the roots, with a small amount of finer material for even rewetting. Maintain a consistently warm indoor position around the long leaves and keep humid air moving gently around the leaves and stems.

Apply a weak complete fertiliser while long leaves, stems or roots are forming. Move to a slightly wider pot when the root ball becomes dense and needs more root space. If the potting mix collapses before then, replace it with fresh open mix in a container that still fits the roots.

Temperature: Maintain roughly 16–24 °C during normal growth and avoid prolonged conditions below 10 °C.

Wait for a partial dry-down, then wet the mix from edge to edge so the entire root ball is moistened evenly. If the long tips lose firmness first, check for dry pockets in the mix before watering more often.

Cut a healthy section of stem carrying at least one node and keep the cutting warm as roots develop.

Problems and solutions for Hoya sp. Aceh (Long Leaf form)

Drying along the long leaf tips

Check if the entire root ball is rewet during watering and if the vine is exposed to hot dry air. Once the cause is clear, adjust watering or move the plant away from hot dry air. Remove only fully dead tissue.

A mature blade creases or tears

Long leaves can be damaged by a tight tie or by being trapped against the support. Reposition flexible stems, replace narrow ties and leave established marked leaves unless they begin to decay.

A tender long-leaf Aceh blade scorches before hardening

Protect each soft elongated blade from midday glass until it hardens. Later lance-shaped leaves should retain their dark lateral veins without dry margins.

Hoya sp. Aceh (Long Leaf form) is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

When was Hoya first published, and what does it mean?
