Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001)

Origin and clone identity of Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001)

Sabah on Borneo is the native range of Hoya sigillatis. AH001 identifies the rounder, heavily silvered clone sold as the Silver form.

Care for Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001)

Position this Hoya in bright filtered light. The heavily silvered surface can mark at hot glass, so introduce any direct early or late sun gradually.

Keep Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001) around 16–24 °C and protect it from prolonged conditions below 10 °C. Maintain roughly 60–80% humidity with light air circulation through the leaves. Maintain steady warmth during growth and keep the plant out of direct draughts.

Let much of the compact root ball dry and wait until the pot feels lighter, then wet the mix evenly and drain it completely. Check below the surface before watering again.

Use small bark pieces with coarse mineral material and only a small amount of fibrous material. Move to a slightly larger pot only after roots have filled the available space.

While new growth is developing, apply orchid fertiliser at a moderate rate; feed less once growth pauses.

Let the short branches spill naturally, turning the pot occasionally so light reaches the inner growth. Retain mature flower spurs and trim only dead or damaged sections.

Let the compact plant trail from a hanging pot, or guide its fine stems around a light hoop as they approach about 100 cm.

For propagation, use a healthy stem section from the plant with at least one node and provide warmth while it roots.

Root, stem and leaf problems in Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001)

Brown patches across silver leaves

Concentrated sun or heat at glass can mark the heavily silvered surface. Move the plant into softer light. Existing patches will remain, while new leaves should open without brown areas.

Rounded leaves wrinkle while the pot is wet

Wrinkling above wet substrate points to roots that are no longer supplying water effectively. Unpot AH001, remove decayed tissue and place the remaining firm roots in fresh open substrate.

Rounded silver AH001 leaves open progressively smaller

Progressively smaller rounded leaves break the dense silver-covered outline of AH001 and can signal root stress. Inspect the compact root system before feeding, then increase filtered light gradually if the roots are firm.

Hoya sigillatis (Silver form, AH001) is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

Where does the name Hoya sigillatis come from?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Sigillatis means marked or stamped and refers to the dense silver pattern.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Ted Green first described Hoya sigillatis in 2004 in Fraterna, volume 17, issue 3, page 2.
