Hoya rosita 'Red Maroon' is a selected clone of the well-loved hybrid Hoya wayetii × tsangii, cultivated for its intensely colored leaf edges and sweet, star-shaped flowers. Unlike standard rosita, this form reliably shows rich maroon or deep bronze leaf margins – even in moderate light – creating a striking, sculptural look that only intensifies with sun exposure. The plant grows as a trailing or climbing vine, ideal for hanging baskets or compact trellises. Once mature, it produces clusters of fragrant red blooms with contrasting coronas, attracting attention without overwhelming a space. If you’re looking for color, scent, and easy care in one plant – this is it.
While both share the same hybrid origin, 'Red Maroon' is a nursery-selected form that develops significantly deeper and more consistent maroon coloration. Even young leaves often flush bronze-red, while standard rosita typically stays greener unless exposed to strong light. The flowers remain similar in shape and scent – small, starry, and sweet – but 'Red Maroon' blooms often appear slightly darker, with more saturated red and plum tones.
Both parents of this hybrid come from tropical Southeast Asia, where they grow epiphytically in forest understories. Hoya rosita 'Red Maroon' inherits the compact form and trailing vines of its lineage, with foliage adapted to bright, filtered light and high humidity. Indoors, expect it to grow up to 1.5 m if allowed to trail or climb. It responds well to tight root space and stable warmth, often blooming more reliably when slightly pot-bound.
By mimicking the filtered light, stable humidity, and airy conditions of its tropical origin, you’ll encourage not only lush foliage but also the reward of fragrant blooms. This cultivar especially appreciates airflow and consistent care – don't overwater, and never cut back spent peduncles, as they may rebloom.
Hoya rosita 'Red Maroon' is an informal clonal name used in the nursery trade to distinguish this darker, redder form of the rosita hybrid (Hoya wayetii × tsangii). While not a registered cultivar, it’s widely grown for its intense foliage pigmentation and compact growth. The name refers to the characteristic maroon tones along the leaf margins.
