Hoya 'Michele' (MB1255) stands out as both bold and refined. This hybrid by breeder Mark Bernardo combines the vigor of Hoya verticillata (Laos) with the elegance of variegated Hoya acuta. Named in honor of Italian botanist Michele Rodda, it’s a strong performer with lush foliage and ornamental umbels. Expect generous, glossy leaves with raised veins and occasional silver splashes, turning deep green in moderate light. White flower clusters appear as a subtle contrast – a perfect balance to the plant’s sculptural foliage. Avoid harsh heat and direct sun, and this hybrid will reward you with steady, healthy growth indoors.
This hybrid’s parent species are native to humid forests of Southeast Asia, where temperatures range from 22 – 28 °C and humidity stays above 60%. Indoors, expect vines up to 2 m under ideal care. Like other Hoyas, it produces latex sap that can irritate skin and should be kept away from pets. Occasional small dark blemishes on leaves (oedema) result from water imbalance – harmless and purely cosmetic.
Hoya 'Michele' thrives when given climbing supports but also works beautifully in hanging setups. Understanding its rainforest lineage helps replicate conditions: bright, filtered light, steady warmth, and humidity lead to lush, fast growth and reliable flowering.
The genus Hoya honors English botanist Thomas Hoy. The name ‘Michele’ commemorates Michele Rodda, a leading expert on the genus. This hybrid was developed by Mark Bernardo, with “MB1255” as its breeding code.
Order now and enjoy this vigorous, sculptural hybrid with unique foliage and refined blooms – a perfect fit for any rare plant collection.
