Hoya latifolia

Natural range and habitat of Hoya latifolia

Hoya latifolia occurs naturally from Myanmar through western Malesia. It grows as a large climbing epiphyte or lithophyte in wet tropical forest.

Care for Hoya latifolia

• Support and leaf space: Install a rigid trellis before the vine carries several mature leaves. Give developing foliage open space beside the support.
• Light around the foliage: Place the broad foliage in bright filtered light. Keep the very large leaves several centimetres from sun-heated glass and allow air to circulate around both surfaces.
• Temperature and humidity: Keep temperatures around 16–24 °C, with prolonged cold below 10 °C avoided. Target a humidity range of about 50–60%.
• Watering: While the plant is actively growing, water once the mix has started to dry and let excess drain. When growth pauses, allow the mix to become drier before watering again.
• Potting mix and repotting: Repot when roots fill the container, using medium-grade bark and mineral particles; keep dense compost to a minimum around the larger root system. Plant shallowly enough that the stem base remains dry after watering, then secure the vine to the frame.
• Feeding: Apply orchid fertiliser at light strength while the plant is actively extending, then reduce feeding as activity drops.
• Propagation: Propagate from a sound node-bearing stem cutting, keeping the rooting medium lightly moist.

Common issues with Hoya latifolia

• A very large leaf splits while opening: The support shifts while the tie presses on soft tissue. Reposition the tie so no pressure falls on the expanding leaf or petiole. Keep the mature blade even if the crease is permanent. Prune to sound tissue only if the stem is damaged or turning black.
• A fresh broad leaf stops expanding early: The watering interval is allowing both stale wet periods and excessive dryness. Use a skewer or finger to check the centre and water only after it has dried appropriately. Avoid increasing the dose while growth is weak. Retain a firm green tip; prune it after blackening, softness or complete drying.
• The very large leaves soften while the centre of the pot stays wet: The broad canopy hides a root zone that is drying too slowly or has begun to rot. Unpot the plant, remove brown or mushy roots, and repot into a snug container with coarse airy, free-draining mix. Keep the stem base above the wet substrate. Propagate a firm green node promptly if decay progresses from the roots into the stem.
• A window-facing section of a very large leaf turns pale and papery: The broad blade overheated in direct sun or against hot glass. Increase the distance from hot glass and retain the marked leaf as long as the tissue stays dry and firm. Acclimate later growth to direct morning sun in short steps.

Hoya latifolia is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

About the name Hoya latifolia

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Latifolia combines Latin latus, broad, with folium, leaf, and describes the species’ broad leaf blades.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

George Don first described Hoya latifolia in 1837 in A General History of the Dichlamydeous Plants, volume 4, page 127.
