Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’

Origin of Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’

Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’ was released and published by Asiatica Nursery in 2006 and is now an accepted Hoya cultivar name.

Its original breeder is unknown; Asiatica Nursery, with Barry Yinger, introduced the selection for its pale marginal variegation.

Everyday care for Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’

Use a normal range around 16–24 °C and a warmer position during prolonged periods under 10 °C. Train the stems onto a trellis in bright filtered light, sheltered from hot direct sun. Keep ‘Eclipse’ with 60–80% humidity and gentle air movement.

Use an airy mix for Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’ in a pot with drainage holes. Water during growth when the pot is lighter and the deeper mix is lightly moist, soaking and draining the roots. When growth slows, let the mix become fairly dry between waterings, without drying the whole root ball.

During new growth, use a light balanced orchid feed about every two weeks; pause when growth stops. When roots fill the pot, move the plant into only the next size.

Use a clean blade to take a healthy one- or two-node stem cutting and remove the lower leaves. Place a node in lightly moist, loosely packed sphagnum in a pot with drainage holes, keeping the remaining leaves above the moss. Keep the cutting warm in bright indirect light with humid air. Once a healthy root system has formed, pot it into an airy mix.

How to solve common problems with Hoya incrassata ‘Eclipse’

• Persistent yellowing or wilting while the mix stays wet: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Thick leaves soften or shrink in a dry pot: Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• New crisp or bleached areas on exposed foliage: The cream border is normal, and healthy leaves feel firm. Hot sun or a sudden increase in light can scorch leaves, leaving new dry or bleached patches. Move the plant into bright, filtered light. If you later move it to a brighter position, introduce the stronger light gradually. Existing dry patches will not recover; retain healthy foliage.
• Cottony insects at leaf-stalk junctions: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
