Hoya heuschkeliana (marginally variegated form)

Origin of Hoya heuschkeliana (marginally variegated form)

Hoya heuschkeliana is native to the Philippines. The marginally variegated form is a cultivated selection, although it is still unclear who selected it or when it entered cultivation.

How to care for Hoya heuschkeliana (marginally variegated form)

• Give this trailing Hoya bright filtered light and protect it from hot sun. Hold conditions close to 16–24 °C. Shift it away from cold exposure when conditions fall close to 10 °C. Humidity around 50–60% supports steady growth. Keep it in bright indirect light, with protection from intense direct sun.
• While new growth develops, feed with balanced orchid fertiliser at moderate strength about every two weeks, then pause when growth stops. Increase the pot size after the roots have filled the existing container.
• Take a healthy stem section with one or two nodes for propagation. Root it in a lightly moist, airy medium and keep it warm in indirect light until established.
• Use an airy, freely draining mix and rewater when the pot feels lighter with only light moisture deeper in the root ball. Soak thoroughly and drain. When growth is slower, wait until the mix is fairly dry while retaining some moisture in the root ball.

Troubleshooting Hoya heuschkeliana (marginally variegated form)

• Soft or yellowing foliage while the mix stays wet: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Small leaves become limp or start to shrivel: The cupped leaves should feel firm when healthy. Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• New dry, bleached patches on exposed leaves: Cream margins are normal, and healthy leaves should feel firm. Hot sun or a sudden increase in light can scorch leaves. Move the plant into bright, filtered light. If you later move it to a brighter position, introduce the stronger light gradually. Existing dry patches will not recover; retain healthy foliage.
• New fine speckling (stippling) with webbing: Inspect damaged leaf undersides with magnification; tapping a leaf over white paper can help locate mites. Confirm spider mites before treatment. Isolate the plant, gently rinse both leaf surfaces and let water drain. Recheck every few days and repeat rinsing while live mites remain.

Hoya heuschkeliana (marginally variegated form) is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.

Hoya heuschkeliana: where the name comes from

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. The species epithet heuschkeliana honours Dexter Heuschkel, then director of Manila Memorial Gardens.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Robert Dale Kloppenburg first described Hoya heuschkeliana in 1989 in Hoyan, 11(1, 2): i.
