Hoya globulosa 'Long Leaf' is a striking epiphytic climber known for its elongated, soft-textured leaves and dense umbels of fuzzy white flowers with deep maroon centers. Native to the eastern Himalayas, this slow-growing Hoya thrives in bright shade and humid conditions. The name âLong Leafâ refers to its noticeably extended foliage, an informal label used by collectors to distinguish this form within the species.
This species originates in humid montane forests stretching from Nepal and Sikkim through northeast India to Myanmar and Yunnan. There, Hoya globulosa grows epiphytically on mossy branches in filtered light, with temperatures around 18 â 24âŻÂ°C and consistently high humidity. Indoors, it prefers similar conditions â warm, moist, and stable.
Wipe leaves gently with a soft cloth to remove dust and promote photosynthesis. Support vines with a moss pole or trellis, or let them trail freely. This species prefers being slightly root-bound â only repot when clearly outgrowing its container. Consistent conditions and patience are key to encouraging blooms.
Hoya globulosa is generally non-toxic but can cause mild irritation due to its sap. It's best kept out of reach of pets and small children.
The genus Hoya honors Thomas Hoy, an English botanist and horticulturist. The species name globulosa comes from Latin and means âsmall globeâ â a reference to its rounded flower clusters. The form âLong Leafâ is an unregistered selection appreciated for its distinctive elongated foliage.
Botanical name: Hoya globulosa Hook.fil. Published in: Hook. fil. (1882), Gardeners' Chronicle I: 732
