Origin of Hoya GFM-04

In cultivation, GFM-04 is commonly expanded as “Gorontalo–Fandrik Mootalu 04” and associated with Gorontalo on Sulawesi and collector Fandrik Mootalu. It is a broad-leaved climbing Hoya. No accepted species name or precise wild locality has been published for this accession.

Care for Hoya GFM-04

• Support and leaf space: Choose a wide rigid support for the weight of the leaves. Large mature leaves can twist the stem when the pot is moved.
• Light around the foliage: Position the soft tip where it is not shaded by older leaves. Stronger diffused light may intensify bronze or red colouring, especially while the broad silver-marked leaves are still soft. Dry pale patches point to excessive heat or an abrupt increase in light.
• Watering: Water thoroughly once the upper layer is dry and the centre is no longer cool, then let excess water drain freely. Check the centre because it can stay moist after the surface dries.
• Potting mix: Pot into a structural blend that drains freely after repeated watering. Anchor the support so it does not shift when the pot is moved.
• Juvenile colour: Bronze-red outer colour on new leaves can be normal. The bronze colour should fade as the broad blade hardens in bright filtered light.
• Temperature and airflow: Avoid cold overnight drops around the large leaf mass, and provide gentle air movement after watering. Space crowded stems so moisture clears quickly and new leaves can unfold freely.
• Feeding: During expansion of a large leaf, give a dilute complete feed after watering. Pause once the leaf has hardened and no new runner is visible. Large expanding blades need steady nutrition without a concentrated dose.
