Home care for Hoya GFM-04

Train the extending stems of GFM-04 onto a trellis. Keep the plant in bright filtered light away from hot sun and cold draughts, with 50–60% relative humidity with gentle airflow. Maintain roughly 16–24 °C and keep long periods below 10 °C from reaching the plant.

Use an airy mix and a container with drainage holes. Rewater when the pot feels lighter and only light moisture remains deeper in the mix, soaking the full root ball before letting it drain. During slower growth, wait until the mix is fairly dry while keeping the root ball from drying completely.

While new growth is active, use all-purpose fertiliser at 25–50% strength and pause when growth stops. Move up one pot size once the roots crowd the container.

For propagation, cut a healthy stem section with one or two nodes using a clean blade. Strip the lower leaves, set a leafless node into lightly moist, loosely packed sphagnum in a draining pot, and keep the remaining leaves above the moss. Warmth, indirect light and humid air support rooting; if covered, keep the cover off the foliage and ventilate it. Transfer the cutting to a small pot of airy mix after a healthy root system has formed.

Common problems with Hoya GFM-04 and what to do

• Soft or yellowing foliage in persistently wet mix: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.
• Broad leaves lose firmness while the pot is dry: Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• Cottony insects at the leaf bases: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.

Hoya GFM-04 is non-toxic to people and pets

• This plant is non-toxic to people, cats and dogs.
• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.
• If a large amount is eaten and symptoms continue, contact a veterinarian or medical professional.
