Hoya dolichosparte

Botanical identity and natural origin of Hoya dolichosparte

Hoya dolichosparte comes from Sulawesi, where it grows on trees in wet tropical habitat.

Indoor care for Hoya dolichosparte

Provide bright indirect light and shield the leaves from hot sun. Keep the plant away from cold glass, draughts and direct heater airflow. Give the extending stems a trellis.

Root a one- or two-node stem cutting in lightly moist sphagnum in a pot with drainage holes. Keep the cutting tool clean before use. Remove the lower leaves and keep the remaining leaves above the moss. Provide warmth, indirect light and humid air with airflow. Transfer to a small container of airy mix once rooted.

Use 16–24 °C as the normal growing range and protect it if temperatures stay below 10 °C. Humidity near 60–80% works well when the foliage also gets gentle air movement. In a dry room, use a humidifier or a ventilated plant cabinet. Check humidity beside the foliage and keep gentle air movement around it.

In chunky, freely draining mix, water when the pot is lighter and the deeper mix remains lightly moist. Soak and drain fully. When growth slows, allow the mix to become fairly dry between waterings, without leaving the root ball completely dry.

Balanced orchid fertiliser at moderate strength can be given about every two weeks while the plant is growing. Pause further applications when no new growth is appearing.

Move to the next pot size once roots fill the container.

Solving common issues with Hoya dolichosparte

• New fine speckling (stippling) with webbing: Inspect damaged leaf undersides with magnification; tapping a leaf over white paper can help locate mites. Confirm spider mites before treatment. Isolate the plant, gently rinse both leaf surfaces and let water drain. Recheck every few days and repeat rinsing while live mites remain.
• Leaves lose firmness while the mix is dry: Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• Soft or yellowing foliage in persistently wet mix: Persistent wetness can damage roots. Drain trapped water and inspect roots if decline continues. If you find a small amount of root rot, use a clean, disinfected tool to cut the soft roots back to firm, healthy tissue. Throw away the rotten roots and old mix. Repot in fresh, airy mix, using a clean pot just large enough for the roots that remain. The pot must have drainage holes. If decay is widespread, save only healthy stem cuttings. Discard the plant if no healthy stems remain, and disinfect your tools afterwards.

Hoya dolichosparte is non-toxic to people and pets

• Chewing a large amount can still cause an upset stomach.

Why is it called Hoya dolichosparte?

Hoya honours the English gardener Thomas Hoy. Dolichosparte combines Greek dolichos, meaning long, with spartē, meaning rope.

Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 in Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae, page 459.

Friedrich Richard Rudolf Schlechter first described Hoya dolichosparte in 1916 in Beihefte zum Botanischen Centralblatt, Section 2, volume 34, page 13.
