Hoya curtisii

A creeping species from South-East Asia: Hoya curtisii

Hoya curtisii is native to Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo and the Philippines. It grows as a creeping and trailing epiphyte in wet tropical forest.

Care for Hoya curtisii

• Placement: Turn the support so the newest runner receives strong indirect light. A shaded position produces stretched growth, wider spacing between the tiny heart-shaped leaves and less branching.
• Watering and root mix: Check the pot and root zone before watering, regardless of how thick the leaves feel. Allow a longer drying interval when the plant is cool or growing slowly. Use a shallow airy mix that rewets evenly around the fine roots. The root ball should hold together without becoming a solid wet plug.
• Trailing growth: Let new stems root across the surface before they spill over the pot. A deep oversized pot is unnecessary for the shallow creeping habit.
• Airflow: Choose a position with little temperature change between day and night. Moderate humidity is suitable when the foliage dries promptly.
• Feeding: Feed the shallow fine roots with a weak complete fertiliser only while runners are extending. Use plain water between applications if mineral residue appears.
• Surface rooting: Let the green form knit across the pot before encouraging long trails. A shallow container keeps the rooting nodes close to an evenly aerated mix.

Hoya curtisii and pet safety

Hoya curtisii is treated as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing leaves or stems can still cause temporary drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea. Keep the plant out of reach of pets that chew foliage, and contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe or persistent.
