How to care for Hoya CNS 005

Give CNS 005 a trellis in bright indirect light, protected from hot sun. Aim for 18–27°C and 40–60% relative humidity, keeping it above about 13°C with gentle airflow.

Use a chunky mix and a pot with drainage holes. Water when the mix is nearly dry throughout and the pot is light, checking moisture deeper in the mix before soaking and draining the roots. The mix dries more slowly when growth slows or light decreases.

Feed lightly with balanced orchid fertiliser about every two weeks during new growth, following the label. Pause when growth stops and occasionally flush with plain water. Once roots fill the container, repot one size larger. Check for fertiliser already in the new mix and follow its instructions before feeding again.

For propagation, take a healthy stem cutting with at least one node. Use a clean blade and wear gloves, as the sap can irritate skin. Remove the lower leaves and root that node in lightly moist propagation mix. Keep the remaining leaves above the mix. Place the cutting somewhere warm with indirect light and humid air. A loose cover can help retain humidity; ventilate it and hold it off the foliage. Move to a small pot once rooted.

• Leaves soften or develop new wrinkles in a dry pot: Check whether the mix around the roots is dry. If the root ball is dry, water thoroughly and drain. If the leaves still wilt after watering, inspect the roots. Avoid repeated watering while the roots are still wet.
• Cottony insects at nodes or leaf joints: Confirm mealybugs beneath the wax and isolate the plant. Remove visible insects with a damp swab or tweezers. Inspect sheltered leaf joints, stems, the pot and any support weekly, removing any mealybugs you find until none remain. If mealybugs persist, use a product approved for home use against mealybugs on indoor ornamental plants in your country. Follow the label for how much to use, where to apply it, when to repeat treatment and all safety precautions.
• New pale speckling (stippling) with fine webbing: Inspect damaged leaf undersides with magnification; tapping a leaf over white paper can help locate mites. Confirm spider mites before treatment. Isolate the plant, gently rinse both leaf surfaces and let water drain. Recheck every few days and repeat rinsing while live mites remain.
