Origin of Hoya CNS 005

CNS 005 also appears in cultivation under the label Hoya sp. Gayo, which associates the plant with the Gayo region of Aceh in northern Sumatra. The relationship between the two labels is undocumented. Its species and exact collection site remain unknown.

Care for Hoya CNS 005

• Light: Let daylight reach the newest leaf from the window side of the support. Use bright filtered light and keep the very large smooth blades clear of heated glass.
• Watering and roots: Water when the upper portion of the mix is dry and the pot feels noticeably lighter. Repeated swings from saturation to drought damage roots and soft new leaves. Pot the heavy vine into a durable open substrate, leaving air spaces around the roots. Set the support before filling the pot and leave the substrate loose around its base.
• Large leaves: Allow generous space between the support and nearby plants. The mature blades can become very large and are easily creased while soft.
• Support: Provide a wide, rigid support that will not twist under the foliage. The root system should not be forced to hold a loose stake upright.
• Temperature and airflow: Keep temperatures consistent and leave open space around the plant. Air should move around the leaf surfaces without bending the runner.
• Feeding: Distribute a dilute balanced feed evenly across the root zone. The support and foliage may hide slow drying, so check the pot first.

• The developing blade opens torn or creased beside the fasteningLikely cause: A sharp change in direction kinked the runner before it hardened.What to do: Move the hoop or trellis away from the path of the next expanding leaf. Keep dry, unchanged surface marks in place. If stem tissue is torn, black or soft, remove it to a sound green section.
• One side of a leaf becomes paperyLikely cause: The developing leaf was exposed to stronger midday light than it could tolerate.What to do: Give it a brighter position without concentrated midday sun. The discoloured patch is permanent, although a firm leaf can remain. Leave the healthy leaf attached and prevent the next one from receiving identical exposure.

Hoya CNS 005 is treated as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing leaves or stems can still cause temporary drooling, vomiting or diarrhoea. Keep the plant out of reach of pets that chew foliage, and contact a veterinarian if symptoms are severe or persistent.

CNS 005 is a cultivation code. The plant also appears under the label Hoya sp. Gayo, although the connection between the labels is undocumented. Robert Brown established the genus Hoya in 1810 and named it for the English gardener Thomas Hoy.
